It is quite alarming that, as young as they are, a lot of young children are leading a sedentary lifestyle. This is pretty common in this age when children are more tuned in to the TV and computer. But as a responsible parent, it is your duty to expose your children to indoor and outdoor games, which not only improve their motor skills, but enhance their mental and emotional well-being too. You have a lot of options as far as games are concerned, but you have to exercise caution when choosing a game for kids. Here are some reminders.
- Consider the age. The game you must choose should primarily be appropriate to your kids’ age. An age-appropriate game guarantees your children’s attention, full participation, and enjoyment. If you have toddlers, for instance, choose the game that involves motor exercises. Preschool children, on the other hand, are more interested in games that include arts, colors, numbers, and letters.
- Prioritize safety. Don’t choose a game just because it looks fun. Remember that your number one priority is still your kids’ safety. If you have toddlers, never play games that involve working with small objects as these can pose as choking hazards. Should you need props, choose the ones that are large enough and are not chemically dangerous. Where to play the game is also important. Choose a big place if you are going to do a lot of running and physical activities. There shouldn’t be breakables, open holes, or tiny spaces where kids can squeeze themselves into. Parks are good, but make sure they are far from roads where oncoming cars are a potential danger.
- Challenge the kids’ creativity. Aside from improving the kids’ physical well-being, the games should also aim to enhance your children’s creativity. You can, for instance, do games that involve crafts-making, painting, and drawing. This will develop your children’s creativity and early appreciation to arts.
- Put high regard on learning. A lot of games have been crafted to integrate learning. There are, for instance, games that dwell on color identification, shape naming, alphabet, and math problems. For younger kids, games that develop body coordination and senses are good choices. Older kids, on the other hand, will enjoy chess and other board games. To have fun is the reason for playing games, but you can utilize games to further your children’s holistic development.
- Stay away from violent games. Never allow games that involve violence. Stick to the games that are wholesome and clean and that which promote sportsmanship. If you have older kids that are fascinated with video and computer games, make sure the games they are playing are non-violent and have no reference to drugs, sex, and illicit activities.
Allot a day when you can play games with the kids. Not only will this be a good bonding activity, you can also have a better idea how your children are progressing. Make this a regular family activity, a day that all of you will look forward to.
