Making the Holiday Special for your Loved One

Difficulty: Moderate
Cost: $51-$250

Valentine's Day is the day set aside for lovebirds. It is a time to express your innermost feelings to the one who brings joy to your life. In short, Valentine's Day is for couples. One of the most popular gifts purchased for Valentine's Day is flowers. Whether you are considering buying your better half carnations, a bouquet of roses, or a mix of different varieties, choosing flowers should be just as important as the day itself. Follow these steps, and you will be sure to bring delight to someone this holiday.

  1. Know the recipient's preferences. The first thing you need to do when choosing Valentine's Day flowers is to know who you are buying for. Flowers come in all sorts of colors, shapes, and smells. Take this opportunity to buy flowers that match your receiver's preferences. Does she like the color pink? Perhaps a Gerbera variety? Does she like something with a light scent? Then maybe you should consider carnations.
  2. Match his or her personality. Did you know that flower arrangements can be done to match the gift receiver's personality? An outdoorsy type personality might like meadow flowers with wood accents or other natural flowers. The romantic personality would probably love an arrangement of soft colors with light fragrances. On the other hand, a contemporary spirit is probably appreciative of vogue style arrangements with large and vibrant flowers. Talk to your local florist to get their opinion before you make a purchase.
  3. And for the men. If your flowers are for a man (yes, a man), then talk with your florist about adding something special to the arrangement to compliment his favorite hobby. For instance, if he likes to play golf, perhaps they can place some golf balls in the arrangement. If he likes to read, perhaps a book light would fit in an arrangement. Men are generally attracted to vivid colors, such as bright yellows and oranges.

According to an America Unwrapped Nationwide survey, flowers were the number one gift given to men and women as a way to say, "I love you." Clothing and jewelry trailed in at the second and third spots, respectively. So, when you go shopping for flowers this Valentine's Day, stop to put some thought into your selection. It will be well worth your effort.
