How To Find a Baby Changing Table Topper

In any nursery, a changing table is a useful piece of furniture that keeps a baby safe and secure while being changed. However, the inevitable will be bound to happen. The time will come when your baby’s changing table will be too soiled beyond cleaning that you would have to replace the topper.

There are several places where you can source your changing table topper. The first place to look, of course, would be the store where you originally bought your changing table. You can also check with the manufacturer of your baby table if they sell toppers separately. If these have their own website, then the topper might be listed as a separately-sold accessory. However, chances are that baby changing tables come as a set, and manufacturers don’t sell the topper separately. If this is the case, then you would have to purchase an aftermarket replacement.

Here are a few things to keep in mind when looking for a replacement topper for your baby’s changing table.

Size and fit. Remember that the first concern when using a baby changing table is your baby’s safety. The topper should be securely held in place, and the baby should be strapped down, so he will not fall in case he cries and squirms while being changed. Be sure to measure the dimensions (length and width) of your original topper, and take note of any special hooks or attachments, so that you can easily fit the new topper in replacement of the old one..

Material. The best material for a baby changing table would involve something that can easily be washed. For the baby’s comfort, though, choose a table topper that is soft, but firm enough such that your baby doesn’t roll and fall off.

Disposable toppers. Apart from ordering a table topper from the manufacturer, you have other options as well. For instance, you can use disposable changing table toppers. These are like the changing mats, although disposable toppers can be discarded after first use. These are fastened securely to the changing table using Velcro straps.

Changing mats. Another alternative is that you can simply use a diaper changing mat every time you change your baby’s diapers, so that the changing table’s table topper will not get soiled easily. These changing mats are quite inexpensive, and they can be brought along virtually anywhere, since they can be folded and stowed away.

Do it yourself. If you have time, you can also create your own changing table topper. You can use the existing topper as a pattern for cutting out the fabric, and sew the fabric as if it were a slip cover. You can then slip the old pad into the fabric you’ve cut out, and your topper is good as new.

As with any baby accessories, you can expect changing table toppers not to have a very long life span. You don’t necessarily have to replace the whole thing. Just look for a replacement topper—or make one yourself—and you have a changing table that’s good as new.
