One of the most critical decisions to be made in life is the choice of a career path. While it is not wise to impose a career decision on your children, it is extremely important to be their primary counselors. This article highlights the essential tips that parents need to guide their children into their innate greatness.

  1. Spend time to do a thorough study of human temperaments before you have children. Do you have a baby on the way? Great! There are indeed lots of joyful preparations to be done, but please do add a study of human temperaments to your list. This is important because even in the first few months, babies will give several clues to their temperamental leanings.

As they grow to become toddlers, the signs get clearer. Some are naturally bold and outgoing. They are the ones that jump at the opportunity to show off before a crowd. Others are shy and reserved. An understanding of your children's core temperaments will be a handy tool in helping them mold their future.

  2. Keenly observe their unique talents and natural interests. Some children naturally enjoy singing and music. Others draw and create artistic works with ease. Some are extremely smart with numbers. Take time to observe your children's special interests and encourage them in that direction. Buy toys that relate to their area of interest. It could be a flute, a harmonica or a pastel box.

Expose them to children's competitions in these areas. Biographies of most accomplished people reveal some incidents in their lives that convinced them of the reality of their inherent talent and set them on an irreversible course leading to inevitable success.

  3. Carefully collect books that contain biographies and stories of people who achieved greatness in your children's areas of interest. As your children grow older, the possibility of achieving success becomes clearer to them when they read about people that actually succeeded.
  4. Encourage meaningful conversations with your children and fantasize together. Children are idealists. They believe everything is possible and they are constantly dreaming of greatness. Don't scoff at their dreams. Take them seriously and dream along with them. This not only encourages them along the path of success, but it also helps you to communicate and enjoy the confidence of your children, especially as teenagers.
  5. Be firm and insist on a balanced approach to success. Just because a child is artistic by nature doesn't excuse a total ignorance of science and mathematics. Help your children recognize that just as they have to eat all kinds of food to keep their bodies healthy, they must also understand a wide variety of subjects to keep their minds healthy and vibrant.

Parents must gently explain the virtues of discipline to children who would naturally want to follow the path of least resistance and do only what they like. Discipline of the mind is one of the most important keys to career success.

The deepest yearning and hunger of every human being with a normal, healthy mind is to make positive, life changing impacts on the lives of as many people as possible. Parents have the awesome power and sobering responsibility to shape the destinies of their children over the years. The tips shared in this article are by no means exhaustive, but they can be used as a springboard by parents in their quest to help their children make excellent career choices.
