Everybody needs a job; it is a way to earn money on your own. For teenagers, it is the start of maturity, and social worth. Getting one's first job is particularly difficult for teenagers, but it can be an unforgettable moment in their lives. As parents, how can you help your teen cope with her first job? Here are some tips.
- Brief your teen on the possible things that may happen in her first job. Make her understand that life at work is far different from life at school. You might offer some pictures or things that are important to her that she can display at her work station to help her feel motivated and inspired.
- She should learn that at work, time is important.
- Customer service is essential. Let her know that this skill could make her valuable employee.
- Teach her about employee/employer relationships. This lesson is very important in her work. At work she should learn how to deal with her employer, even if she has problems with that person.
- She should also learn about co-worker relationships. In any kind of work, employees have different attitudes. She should not expect any of them to adjust for her, but she should herself adjust to them. There are always difficult employees, and they may be especially hard on a newly hired worker like her.
- Let her know that in any work situation, the key to good relationship is learning to get along with everyone. Some people are difficult to get along with, but she has to force herself to slowly build good working conditions.
- When she gets home, talk to her about her job. Gauge for yourself whether your daughter enjoys her work or if she has problems. If she is enjoying the job, then okay. If she mentions problems, help her to sort them out. Give her encouragement and tips. The first job is always difficult for anyone.
When she gets through this first job, it will be easier for her to adjust during a second job. Coping with the first job builds her strength and expands that original goal of earning money. The first job gives her awareness about the real world of work. It can give her a lifetime ambition that through hard work she will achieve what she wants. It teaches her how to live in a community of responsible citizens. The first job is a learning experience, and part of a path to what she will become in the future.
