How To Keep Baby Safe in the Nursery

The most important thing on every parent’s mind is always the safety of their children. It doesn’t really matter how old they are, parents will always worry about keeping their children protected at all times from anything that can cause them harm. Helpless babies need to be safeguarded more as they do not have the means to defend themselves in the face of any type of danger. This is why it is necessary that a nursery is made and arranged in such a way that no accidents can happen which would hurt a baby. Here are a few ways to keep your nursery as danger-free as possible:

  • When it comes to your baby’s crib, keep it away from cords and hanging curtain drapes that your baby might reach for and get entangled in. Choking is a great risk you can avoid by taking this extra precaution. If you window does not have some kind of window guard, keep your baby crib away from it too. You’ll never know when he might decide to climb through and may fall out off the window. The same goes with electrical outlets. Your baby crib must not be anywhere near them. Be very careful with bookcases or other types of furniture that may fall over your baby in case he may try to tug on them. Anti-tip straps are available to keep these items securely in place.
  • Within the confines of the crib, you must be careful with objects you leave there. Little items that could cause your baby to choke are a definite no-no. If your baby uses teethers or pacifiers, hanging them around your baby’s neck may increase the risk of getting strangled. Little toys hanging on strings and hovering above the crib is okay until such time that your baby has grown big enough to reach for them.
  • Be very careful with your toy chests. Make sure that they are not the types where the lids close with a snap. Installing spring supports is a good idea to prevent accidents from happening. If not, it would be best for the toy chest not to have a lid at all. The chest should also have holes for ventilation just in case your child falls in and the lid closes on him. This way, he will still be able to breathe properly even when trapped inside.
  • Make sure that you give the biggest priority to the safety of the baby crib itself. The slats must not be too wide apart that your baby’s head could get caught in between. Its drop sides must be measured carefully as well. You must be able to adjust the height of the mattress as your baby learns how to sit and stand. Make sure that the crib itself is very sturdy. If it wobbles, stop using it. Try to get a crib that can be rolled easily all around the room too. Metal casters must be selected over plastic ones. Always check your crib’s hardware to ensure that they are well-maintained. Make it a habit.

Never take anything for granted when it comes to keeping your nursery safe. Unimaginable things have happened that caused accidents, some fatal, because little things were neglected. There is no such thing as being too careful when it comes to your baby’s safety. If something does not sit right with you, trust your instincts and resolve the problem immediately. You not only keep your baby away from danger, you are also less likely to worry, knowing that you have taken all the steps necessary in protecting him.
