Most people don't realize just how important family is until they are adults. As children and teenagers, we would much rather spend our time with our friends. It is only when we have families of our own that we see the value of keeping in touch with family. Here are some suggestions for how to keep in contact with your family.
- Keeping the Family Together - As we leave the nest and create families of our own, it becomes harder to stay connected to our loved ones. Work, raising children, and dealing with our own problems can all affect how we stay connected with those we love. The act of keeping the family together doesn't happen on its own, it takes a bit of work and even sacrifice at times.
- The Dinner Table - You have probably heard it said that the best way to create family togetherness is at the dinner table. There is a lot of truth to this statement. As children become teenagers, they start becoming involved in their own activities such as work or sports and families seem to not spend as much time together. As hard as it may be to find time for family dinners, it is an important way to keep the family in check with each other. Try scheduling two or three nights a week for family dinners; this is certainly better than nothing at all.
The same thought applies to the extended family. Of course, holidays are great for big family get-togethers and most people use the holidays as a ways of keeping in touch with each other. But what about the rest of the year? Inviting loved ones over for Sunday dinner or monthly dinners can create a wonderful way for grandparents to visit with their grandchildren and cousins to play together.
- Sharing the Cost - Getting the gang together for monthly family dinners can get costly if it is always on one person. Try taking turns at each sibling's house and plan on having each family contribute towards the meal. There are many items that can be contributed along with the food. Disposable plates and cups along with beverages are just an example. Another alternative would be to have everyone chip in a certain amount of money toward the cost of the meals.
- Family Dinner Themes - Be creative with your dinners. The dinner host can be responsible for creating a theme for the gathering and everyone can bring food geared towards that theme. Try having a Mexican night, a seafood night, an "anything goes" night. Holidays offer a wide range of dinner themes with Christmas, Valentine's Day, Fourth of July, among others.
Whatever the occasion, it is important to make an effort to put family first. Sometimes it takes a little work and planning but it is always well worth it.
