How To Maintain Abstinence in Your Christian Courtship

Back in ancient times, sex or intercourse was considered taboo and was normally reserved for married couples. In fact, you can see various religious rules about sexual promiscuity in the Holy Bible, the Quran, and the Torah. Today, this value has been modified significantly since modern culture has turned this sacred and intimate ritual into a casual thing. The truth is that even devout Christians have a tough time in avoiding premarital and casual sex. There are many reasons why this has happened. Some point to the media using sex to sell stuff, some point to the Internet that is filled with all kinds of pornographic images, and others simply point to mysterious change of culture. Nevertheless, if you are a Christian wanting to preserve the values stated in the Holy Bible about sexual abstinence, then here are some things to keep in mind.

  • Put God in the middle of your courtship. One way to ensure that your courtship maintains a certain sex-free decorum is by placing God in the middle of things. Whether you are taking her out for dinner, watching a movie, or hanging out at home, if both of you acknowledge and even make it a point to be aware that God is in the middle of your relationship, it will give you a reason to stay sane and not succumb to the temptations of the flesh.
  • Start and end with prayer. As mentioned above, if both of you place God in the middle of your courtship, you should be able to weather any temptation that comes your way, especially when it comes to premarital sex. Of course, this is easier said than done. However, it can get a whole lot easier if you start every meeting or date with a prayer and part ways with another prayer. God will bless you with the strength to overcome any sexual temptation.
  • Know that Jesus promised blessing to those who can wait. Upon reading the Bible, particularly the teachings of Jesus, you should find out that Jesus did not really outlaw casual and premarital fornication. Instead, he went with a different perspective saying that anyone willing to wait for the right time will be blessed with magnanimous and that those who do give in to the temptations of the flesh will have to deal with the real life consequences of this particular sin. Now you may state the fact that God forgives those who sin however, it does not mean that you should bank on that fact and go on sinning since you know He will forgive you later on. Remember, Jesus states that you are still responsible for your own misgivings. He may forgive you but you will still have to face the consequences. You may ask what these consequences are; well, one major consequence that most unwed couples face is premarital pregnancy.

Block yourself from the hype. Media is one of the most responsible entities that have made casual sex a staple of modern culture. With so many ads, movies, and TV shows treating sex as something as common as enjoying a Big Mac at McDonalds, it can be quite tough to not get into the hype. Remember, media is not the only one that will pressure you into giving in; you will also have to deal with peer pressure and the easy access to pornography. To counter these psychological instilling mediums that will surely diminish your Christian values and transform them into a moment of carnal pleasure, you must again refer to the Bible and simply decide that premarital and casual sex is just not congruent with your belief.
