The bridal garter was originally made to hold up the leg stockings of the bride. Gaining notoriety globally, it is now known as the second most recognized accessory for a bride. If you do not know how one looks like, it is a circular garter that is made of lace and fabric and often white in appearance. It is a must for any bride who follows a traditional wedding. With that, while most women order one that is already pre-made, some opt to make their own bridal garters. For one, it is very cost-efficient and another thing is that you can customize it to how it reflects your desire and your personality. You can create something as simple as a white band or as extravagant as a garter that has a multitude of colors or designs. If you are interested in learning how to make a bridal garter, read on.
- Materials you will need. For this task, you will need the following: a strip of fabric preferably three inches wide and 1½ times larger than your leg measurement (thigh area), a piece of elastic around half an inch in width, lace trim the same length and width as the fabric and some accessories or decorations to add for the finished product. It’s up to you which decorations you would like. You can go over the top or make it as simple as you can. It’s really up to you.
- Procedure. The first things you will need to do are take your strip of fabric and fold it in half. Fold it from the top, lengthwise and make sure that the inside part is facing you. Then, proceed by sewing the edges of the fabric to make a tube. The next thing you will need to do is to align the seams and ironing it to make the fabric flat. You will now sew the lace in the bottom of the fabric, which will be then followed by trying it on for size. If you are comfortable enough, try it on with the elastic to measure where you will cut it for just the right size. After making the measurements, you can now proceed by sewing the elastic and lace to the end of the fabric to complete the process.
- Decorations. You can add accessories such as butterflies, beads or gems to the garter by simply using adhesive and attaching them one by one. Make sure that they are not too cluttered as it may end up looking tacky. Allow the glue to dry before using the garter as the accessories may fall off if the glue is still wet.
In addition, you can also choose the color of the fabric for variety. You can choose other colors aside from white, depending on what you want and the motif of the wedding. Besides using it for yourself, you can also make garters for the bridesmaids. Of course, you would really have to use a different color for them. Now that you know how to make bridal garters, you can now make one on your own for your wedding! Best wishes!
