Next to family, friends can be the most important people in our lives. With the popularity of Internet social networking, some people have trouble really making friends. Stick to these steps and you will find out how to make new friends.

  1. Smile and be approachable. Attract people to you by being approachable.
  2. Be yourself. No matter what your interests, hobbies or personality, there are others out there who are like you. By being yourself, you will make friends who are interested in the real you, not someone you pretend to be.
  3. Get involved in activities. Whatever your hobbies or interests, consider looking for groups that share them. If you are into soccer, find a team in your area to join. If cooking is your hobby, don’t just watch Food Network by yourself. Get out and take a cooking class.
  4. Spend time with different groups. It is easy to get comfortable and develop routines that limit our contact with new people. If you socialize with the people you work with, or only with those who grew up in your neighborhood, you are limiting your potential for new friendships. Step outside of your comfort zone and try making friends in new places with different types of people.
  5. Show you can be a friend. Being a friend takes work. As busy as people are these days, sometimes making new friends just seems too difficult. By showing that you can be a friend, you can listen and be counted on, you are letting people know you are worth the time it takes to become friends.
  6. Laugh. Having a friend to laugh with is a gift. Share your sense of humor with those around you and people will gravitate your way.
  7. Listen when others talk. People like to talk but talking isn’t fun when there’s no one to listen. Develop your listening skills to be a better friend.
  8. Throw a get-together. You already have a few friends. Why not take advantage of the love and respect you have for them by meeting some of their other friends. Throw a get-together and ask every guest to bring someone new. Make it a movie night, a sporting event or a casual dinner party. Just be sure everyone knows to bring another friend.

You cannot go out and decide to make more friends. Friendship takes time to develop. By being a good friend, you make yourself available to others who need friends. Be patient and you may develop lasting friendships.
