So you have found a girl and you are so interested in her, you can't stop thinking of her. She is the first person you see in a crowded room, she is the woman of your dreams and you want to call her. Where do you find the courage to make the first phone call? Do you plan the whole conversation in your head beforehand? Maybe you're planning to make some notes on possible subjects to talk about, so you won't choke and end up listening to her breath instead of engaging her in good conversation. I don't think you need to do anything so drastic.
In order to make the first phone call to someone you like, you will need her phone number. You could get her number from one of her friends, but it's much better to get her number directly from her. Whatever you do, don't sneak into her employee file to get her number or con the office lady for it. You have to be able to tell her where you got her number from. If she has given you her number, you know she won't mind if you call. In fact, she might get irritated if you don't.
Now that you have her number, you need a reason to make that first phone call. If you work together or go to school together, you could call her about what time the meeting is or about the homework assignment. Don't waste that first phone call by asking some lame question like, "Did it rain at your house last night?" The best reason to make the first phone call is, of course, to ask her on a date. Dinner and/or a movie make a good first date, but you can be more adventurous and suggest something like rock climbing or dancing. Try to pick something she might like to do.
Okay: now you have her number and a reason to make the first phone call. Pick up the phone, dial her number and be very polite with whoever answers the phone: "Hello, may I please speak with Mary?"
When she answers the phone, say "Hi, how are you? This is John and I would like to know if..." Remember to relax; try not to talk too fast and, most importantly, listen. Always be considerate and polite and you will do just fine. After she says "yes", agree on a date and time, and where you will be going. For the date itself, be on time, relax and have fun - if the first date goes well, the second phone call will be a much easier one to make.
