Dress the bride traditionally. An Italian bride is traditionally dressed in a white dress to symbolize her purity. She should also have a vale (which is said to guard against bad luck and also ensures that the groom doesn't see her face before they are married). The bride can choose to purchase a wedding dress new, or she can wear one handed down from an Italian relative.
Catholic Italian weddings should have a mass. If the bride or the groom is Catholic, their Italian wedding should include a mass before the reception. The priest will take care of most of the planning, but the bride and groom should expect to be involved, even minimally, in the mass.
Hire an Italian band to play at the reception. If you can afford it, an Italian band is the ideal entertainment at an Italian wedding. You can hire them to play for just a portion of the evening, or get them to stay and party for your guests until the wee hours of the morning. Some couples like to mix up the entertainment at their weddings by including a disc jockey too. No matter who provides the music, make sure that the bride and her father do a traditional dance together after the bride and groom do their first dance.
Offer lots of food and beverages. The food at an Italian wedding is what everyone looks forward to. The reception meal should be like a feast, offering a traditional multi-course Italian meal (and of course, lots of wine). Start with an antipasto, containing olives, mushrooms, chesses, salami, mortadella, salami and prosciutto. And then go on to courses including pasta, chicken, veal, soup and vegetables. Follow the meal with an assortment of delectable desserts. (At this time, the bride and groom can choose whether or not to serve wedding cake to guests as well, along with the traditional Italian treats and sweets like Italian wedding candy.)
In terms of alcohol, ensure that you offer your guests lots of liquor, wine and beer to toast with. There will definitely be a lot of congratulatory speeches at the wedding and these usually end with a toast.
Give your guests wedding favors. Most Italian wedding favors are little mesh bags that contain sugar-coated almonds. Make sure to include an odd number of them in each bag for good luck. Have one of these for each of your guests to take home.
Break the traditional vase or dish. When the meal is over and the party has really begun, don't forget to include the traditional shattering of the vase (or dish) at the Italian wedding. It is believed that the more pieces the glass breaks into, the more years of happy marriage the newlywed Italian couple should plan to have.
