With the increase in crime rates, it's no longer out of the ordinary to keep a gun at home in order to protect your household. When all the security measures that you've put up in your house don't keep the criminals out, having a gun in your room can be your last resort.
Unfortunately, a weapon can be your worst enemy as well as your best friend. Failing to follow safety rules can cause this precautionary effort to backfire on you. So, here are some tips that you need to follow in order to prevent weapon-related accidents from happening.
Step 1:
Keep in mind the fundamentals of firearm safety.
- Whenever you are handling your weapon, make sure that the muzzle of your handgun is pointed in a safe direction. This means that it is pointed away from you or other people in your immediate area.
- You should never point a firearm at anyone or anything you do not intend to shoot. In fact, pointing a firearm at another person can be considered a hostile act or a threat to life.
- If you are not ready to shoot, keep your finger outside the trigger guard. Most accidents occur when the finger is on the trigger before being prepared to shoot. You might end up losing a toe or hurting someone if you are not careful.
- Keep the action open and the gun unloaded until you are ready to use it. This will help you make sure that there are no bullets in your weapon, removing the risk of misfires.
Step 2:
You must have the right attitude towards your firearm.
- Always treat it as if it were loaded. It should always be pointed away from a person when you are handling it. You should also keep your finger away from the trigger when doing so. Before handing it to another person, open the action so that you can make sure that it is unloaded.
- Know your weapon. Before handling any firearm, the first thing that you should do is read the instruction manual that comes with it. And, if you have any questions, look for qualified people who can help you out. It's better to be safe than sorry.
- Think about the consequences of pulling that trigger before you shoot. You shouldn't allow anger or other negative emotions to drive you to use your weapon against anyone. Firing a gun should be a decision that would save your life, not a mindless act that can get you into trouble.
Step 3:
Keep your firearm in top condition.
- Make sure your firearm is in good mechanical condition before firing it. Have your firearm checked periodically for erosion, cracking or wear and tear by a competent gunsmith.
- Never fire a gun that may have a plugged or partially blocked barrel.
- If you plan on having some modifications done to your gun, make sure that you find someone who is qualified to do it for you. These modifications must not in any way interfere with your gun's safety features.
Step 4:
Always secure your firearm.
- Never leave your firearm lying around. Keep it in a vault when you are not handling it. This way, your children wouldn't play with it and end up hurting themselves.
- Never leave your firearm in your car. Remember that this is licensed to you. If someone steals it and uses it on another person, you can be blamed for it.
