Difficulty: Very Easy

Prom night is a big deal for most teenagers. It's not just about finding the perfect dress or snagging a hot date, though. Safety should be the first thing on your mind as you head out the door. Follow these five steps for a prom night you'll never forget.

  1. Set clear rules. If sex is nowhere on your prom agenda, it's a good idea to let your date know. You can definitely be flirty and sweet, but you want to make sure he knows what the boundaries are. Not because you're prissy and he's stupid, but just so that there's no misunderstanding.
  2. Don't lie. Tell your parents the truth about your after-prom plans. They're not asking because they're paranoid or because they want to keep you from having a good time. They want you to be safe. Also, don't forget your cell phone. If something were to happen, you want to be able to call for help.
  3. Carry cash. It's always a good idea to carry a little extra cash wherever you go in case of emergency. Make sure you have an extra 20 bucks and the phone number for a taxi service. You never know what might happen. The limo could break down or get lost.
  4. Stay with the group. Proms are about being with your friends. Don't make it a first date with the cutie in your History class. Save the date for later when you get to know him better. If you do go with a new boyfriend or someone from a different school, make sure a friend is close at hand. This way you won't get caught in an uncomfortable situation with someone you barely know. Plus, if your date turns out to be a dud, at least you have someone to rescue you.
  5. Don't drink. Prom night should be fun and worry-free. Drinking complicates things. It makes your judgment as fizzy as whatever you're drinking. Who wants to wake up and not know what happened the night before?  Drinking makes it feel like your actions have no consequences, which is very dangerous, especially if you're going to be driving. Do yourself a favor and get buzzed the all-natural way - dance, laugh, and have fun with your friends.

Just five simple steps to a safe prom night. Look at it this way: it's easier than finding the right shoes for your fabulous dress.
