There are more pessimists in the world than there are optimists. As human individuals, it is easy for us to be negative, both with ourselves and the rest of the world. Having a negative outlook can often escalate into serious depression and other psychological imbalances, making not only us, but also those around us, miserable. To get rid of your negative side and to function with a brighter and positive outlook, follow the guidelines described below. You will find that you will be happier and content just by following some simple suggestions.
Do a "self-examination". To cure any problem, it is important to get to the root of the problem first. What makes you think negatively all the time? Firstly, it could be on account of low self-esteem or loss of confidence. Secondly, it could be because you allow yourself to be bogged down by unnecessary minutiae. Thirdly, you could be given to excessively retrospect, concentrate too much on incidents or failures in the past; or you could be worrying constantly about the new problems or fresh worries that the future could bring. Once you've been able identify the reason(s) for your negative thinking, you should be able to get a better understanding of the problem and how to resolve it.
Think and act positive. This is action opposite to what you're currently indulging in. While it may take some effort, it will change your life. Begin with small positive affirmations or thoughts, and once you've succeeded at them, move on to the bigger things. Set goals with reachable milestones; vow to lose at least a couple of pounds each week if you're fighting the battle of the bulge. This is an easier goal to achieve, than if you started off setting a goal of losing 30 pounds in 30 days. Not only, is it not possible, you will also feel discouraged and start obsessing on your failure. The same is true of any other project or work that you want to undertake. Taking small and easy steps will definitely help you in reaching your goals, rather than taking giant over-strides.
Avoid regrets and looking back. None of us are perfect; so accept that you have and will continue making mistakes along the way. What is important is not to spend time brooding or regretting you actions or lack thereof; learn from your mistakes and move on. Remember that lessons learnt the hard way, stay learnt the best. Always endeavor to make a fresh start and make sure not to repeat past mistakes.
Conquer your fears. It is easy to be negative about things which are unknown or are unable to face because we fear them. Learning to let go of your fears is a good place to start. Try to learn new things or skills. Learn to get along or conquer your phobias; you will find that fear of the unknown is always the biggest stumbling block to success.
Challenge and channel your perspective. Once you get used to thinking or looking at things in a certain way, you find it easier to dismiss alternative perspectives or viewpoints. Instead, look at the picture from a different angle, so to speak. If you are open to accepting that there are other viewpoints and perspectives which are just as right as yours are, you will find yourself becoming more flexible as a person, and open to positive affirmations.
Learning how to stop being negative is not rocket science. You should be open to adapting to changing circumstances and looking at them as positive challenges to overcome. As time goes by, you will find that it becomes easier to get rid of negative thoughts and any of the above-mentioned guidelines can help you think positively.
