As the star of your own wedding, you pretty much have free reign on what you can and cannot do. When it comes to your wedding gown, it can be as elaborate or as simple as you want. However, if you want to wear something a little more revealing or risqué, you have to keep in mind the solemnity and appropriateness of your attire. Most churches are more open about letting brides wear something a little sexier than traditional wedding gowns, but you have to stay within limits.
Here’s how to wear a revealing wedding gown in church.
- Keep in mind the general rule of thumb in church is that appropriate attire means no slippers, nothing too short, too plunging or sleazy. This goes for your wedding dress as well. You may wear a strapless gown or something with a low back, provided it is tasteful. You want to look like a beautiful and sophisticated bride, not a streetwalker.
- When choosing your gown, it’s all right to draw attention to your best assets but in an appropriate manner. Too sexy isn’t appropriate for a wedding gown so follow the suggestion of your designer. Also, choose one area of your body to highlight. For example, if you’re going with a plunging back, make the front conservative. Or if you’ll go with a plunging neckline, choose a gown with sleeves. You want to leave something to the imagination.
- Consider using a shrug or beaded bolero jacket as part of your wedding attire. Some backless, strapless or sleeveless gowns can be made to look more conservative with the addition of a simple beaded bolero top. You can ask your modiste or the wedding gown salon to include one in the same fabric and motif as your wedding gown. Then, when you get to the reception, you can take it off and wow your guests. It will also seem like you have two different outfits, when you really have only one.
- Use tape to hold your gown up. Double sided tape is available at most lingerie stores. Use this to make sure your dress stays on, no matter how many times you kneel, sit or stand up. It’s the secret of the stars that walk the red carpet. Use double sided tape to make sure your plunging neckline doesn’t gap open, especially if you’ll lean forward to hand your bouquet to the flower girl. Double sided tape won’t damage the fabric of your dress but will make sure your gown stays plastered to your skin, no matter what you do. You don’t want your dress slipping off you as you move around and give the priest or the congregation something to think about.
Your wedding gown should reflect your taste and personality. So if being sexy is part of who you are, go ahead but do it within the boundaries of good taste. Save the sexy outfits for your honeymoon.
