Frizzy hair is a pain in the butt because it's caused by a number of factors. High humidity, wind, dryness, a bad haircut, split ends, static, and product build-up; these are just some of the factors that create frizzy hair. Using the right shampoo, conditioner, and after-shower products on your hair is the easiest way to prevent frizz from happening to you. Here is what you need to look for while you are shopping for frizz-fighting goods:

  1. Don't wash your hair every day; this will strip your hair of its natural oils, which are the best moisturizers there are. Every 2-3 days, use shampoos that are labeled as "moisturizing." These will help clean your hair without stripping out too many of those natural oils that we all need.
  2. When it comes to conditioners, choose one based on the thickness of your hair. If you have thin hair, too much moisturizer will get rid of your frizzies, but it will also weigh your hair down flat. Instead, looks for a conditioner for color-treated hair; this will provide a bit of extra moisture without weighing your hair down. For thicker tresses, use a conditioner that is formulated to "smooth." These will deposit oodles of moisture, as well as a thin layer on top of your hair to help weigh it down a bit, along with keeping it sweet and smooth. Another good option is a leave-in conditioner, no matter how thin or thick your hair is. Leave-in conditioners may seem a bit slimy at first, but they really do help. This will also cut down on product build-up, which is bad for anyone.
  3. Take the time to deep condition your hair once a week; no more, no less. Go for a product that is even stronger than the traditional deep conditioners - look for a hair mask. This is the deepest conditioning that you can find. There are a number of great ones that you can find on the shelves, but if you want to go really natural, make this one at home:
    how to prevent frizzy hair
    • 1 avocado
    • 1 egg yolk
    • 1 banana, mashed
    • extra virgin olive oil

Mix the first 3 ingredients thoroughly. Add extra virgin olive oil until you reach the desired consistency and enough mixture for the amount of hair you have. Work into hair and allow it to sit for 20 minutes. Rinse thoroughly with cool water.

  4. Styling products are usually the first thing people think of when they want to treat frizzy hair. There is no shortage of specialty products out there, aimed at those with serious frizz. Do keep in mind that no product is a magic tool; you have to find what works best with your hair and climate. Cream styling products are the best, because they give your hair even more moisture, which is the main cause of frizz. Silicone-containing products come in at a close second, though they only disguise the frizz, they don't actually get rid of it.

DO NOT use gels, mousses or hairsprays that have a high alcohol content (just about all of them); this will only make your frizz issue worse. Also, make sure to avoid using hot oil treatments - they seem like the best solution, but the bit of moisture that they provide does not combat against tough frizz; these products are better for use on normal hair.

Quick Tips:
Get your hair trimmed every 6 to 8 weeks. This will stop split ends from splitting up the hair shaft and causing hair to frizz out.
When towel drying your hair, resist rubbing or creating any sort of friction.
The best way to eliminate frizz is to let your hair dry naturally.
