How To Care for Your Skin

Who doesn't want beautiful skin?  We feel our best when we look our best and beautiful skin is certainly a big part of looking our best. Good routine skin care, however, is usually far from our minds and we often take our skin for granted. Basic skin care isn't as hard as most people might think. For many of us, just trying to figure out what skin type we have can be a problem. There are three basic skin types: Dry, oily and combination skin. Most of us will fall under one of these three categories unless you're one of the rare ones blessed with normal skin.

If your skin is often dry with a tight feeling after washing, and sometimes flaky, you probably have dry skin. If you have dry skin, you will want to use a good moisturizer daily and avoid cleansing products (like soap) that dry out your skin. Depending on how dry your skin is, you may find it necessary to wash your face only once a day using a mild cleanser followed by a creamy moisturizer.

If you find that your skin is shiny and you often break out with blackheads or acne, you have oily skin. With oily skin, you will benefit from a good astringent or toner whose key ingredient is alcohol and a non-greasy cleansing bar. Washing your face twice a day with a medicated cleanser is a good idea when you have this type of skin. Follow the cleansing with an astringent and if your skin has a breakout, try using an acne lotion.

If you have combination skin, you'll find that you have an oily t-zone across the nose, forehead and chin with dryness around the cheeks and eyes. For combination skin, a good cleanser designed for your skin and moisturizer for your dry areas is in order. You should wash your face twice a day with a mild exfoliating cleanser to open up pores, and then use a mild toner on your t-zone and a moisturizer on your dry areas.

If you're blessed with normal skin, washing your face twice a day with a mild cleanser should be sufficient unless you want to use a moisturizer afterwards.

When you are ready to begin your beauty routine, follow the simple steps below to best care for your skin:

  1. Your first step to beautiful skin is washing. Use warm water and a cleanser suited for your skin type, apply in a circular motion with the tips of your fingers or a soft cloth, then rinse with cool water to tighten pores. Dry your face with a soft towel.
  2. Your next step should be to use a toner if your skin type allows it. Apply the toner with a cotton pad to remove any traces of oil or dirt left from cleansing.
  3. Moisturizing should be your third step. Apply the moisturizer on your face and neck thoroughly with the tips of your fingers in a circular motion.
  4. Your final step should be sunscreen. Often many of us forget about sunscreen even though it is the most important step to beautiful skin. If you're able to find a moisturizer containing sunscreen for the daytime, then by all means go for it! Apply the sunscreen in the same manner as your moisturizer and remember your skin will thank you for it.
     

While the steps above are a daily routine for skin care, a good deep cleansing mask and exfoliating scrub would be beneficial for your skin as well. Keep in mind though that masks and scrubs should be used on a weekly basis only. One final thought on beauty products. Some manufacturers offer what they call beauty soap for your skin. However soap should be a no-no for any skin type. While it's a very inexpensive beauty-cleansing product, soap is full of harsh detergents that can irritate and dry out even the oiliest of skins. With that in mind, be kind to your skin and in return your skin will be kind to you.
