Body piercing has existed since the dawn of mankind. Even in the olden times, people have already been expressing themselves with body art, which includes tattoos and piercings. These days, men and women are more conscious of how they look, regardless of the pains that they go through. Some try different body art and rituals to carry on with the trend, and this includes having different parts of the body pierced.
The best way to effectively maintain any piercing on your body is to avoid touching them and moving them about when unnecessary. Body piercings are unlike earrings that you can take off and wear as you please. The earlobes are made of supple skin and are thinner, so it’s ideal to replace earrings as you wish. The only time you should touch your other body piercings would be when you are cleaning it. Eyebrow and nipple piercings are especially more susceptible to infections because of their location and the softness of the skin.
Eyebrow Piercing - To clean your eyebrow piercing, you can use saline solution, or water with a bit of salt. Soak some cotton balls in the saline solution and then put the cotton ball over the piercing, soaking it for a couple of minutes. If your eyebrow jewelry is shaped like a barbell, you can use an old toothbrush to clean the edges.
After soaking the piercing, pat your eyebrow area with a dry paper towel or tissue paper. Be sure you don’t leave any tissue paper pulp behind, as this might irritate the skin. Using a towel is discouraged, especially if your piercing is new, as towels breed molds and mildew, particularly when damp.
Nipple Piercing - Nipple piercings are best cleaned while in the shower using soap that is fragrance-free or antibacterial. Nipple piercings usually dry up very fast when the jewelry is removed, so cleaning should be done while the jewelry is on the body. While showering, twist and turn the piercing around, such that all surfaces of the jewelry will be cleaned, too, including the part that is near the skin.
After you have washed your piercing, pat the area dry with a paper towel or tissue paper. Avoid using towels, as these are prone to have bacteria or molds, especially when damp. Again, avoid moving your jewelry too much, because these might irritate the piercing, and could cause infection, particularly if the wound is still new.
Note that you usually have to wait about six months before you can remove or replace your nipple or eyebrow piercing. Otherwise the wound might close soon after the jewelry is removed. Also, avoid pulling too much on your piercings when cleaning. You might also accidentally pull on them while dressing up or bathing, so watch out for these areas, lest you want to stretch your skin too much and bleed.
Cleaning and grooming are an important part of life. Not only do you look good when clean, but you will feel good and keep healthy, too.
