Plus-sized men and women always have an issue with finding clothes which fit them well! Plus-size clothes are not easily available in most stores and if you do find them, chances are they will not fit! You may be left with clothes that are too tight or too loose. Wearing clothes that are too tight create more lumps and bulges which make you look awkward. Loose clothes, on the other hand, give you a false sense of security that your big size is well-camouflaged, but end up making you look even bigger than your usual size! Follow these tips for how to get the best fit with plus-size clothing and avoid nasty embarrassments!
- Know your body type and sizes. Before you go shopping for new clothes, know your body type and vital measurements, this will help you choose the right-fitting clothes. Starting with the basics, women who are shopping for undergarments need to measure their bust line, waist and hips in order to buy the right bra and panties. If you are unsure of how to measure yourself, there is help available at most lingerie stores. The right underwear plays an important part in getting the right body shape, not to mention the confidence it gives you! A right-sized and fitted bra will provide proper support for your breasts, accentuating your curves and you can avoid looking like a sagging potato sack! Once you've got the right undergarments, go ahead and start looking for your daily formal and casual clothing.
Men will need to measure their chest, waist, length of the inner and outer legs. There may not be much change in height once you reach full adulthood, but due to changes in the waistline, you may need to add an inch or two more to the trouser length.
- Don't buy without trying it on first! Always try on clothes before you buy them. Some of us are too embarrassed to use changing rooms in public places. If you're one of those people, check with the store management about their return or exchange policy. If the store allows it, then ensure you keep the receipt, so you can bring back the clothes which did not fit or suit you once you tried them at home.
- Know the types of fabric. Cotton fabric is universal and suits all skin types. While choosing fabrics, make sure you go for cottons as these will let you and your skin breathe, no matter what the weather conditions! Also, ensure you buy a size larger as cotton can shrink after the first wash! Avoid stiff pleated fabrics as they will only make you look bigger.
- Try getting alterations. A good tailor masters the art of hiding flaws and showing off your best assets, so visit a tailor when you've bought clothes that are your size, but need some alterations to make them the perfect fit! You may have to spend a little more than your planned budget, but you will offset this against the risk of forcefully trying to fit into an expensive outfit and causing damage or even having a "wardrobe malfunction" at the most inappropriate of times!
- Don't stick with one brand. By sticking to a particular brand or store, you may end up missing flattering designs and styles stocked by a different store or clothing brand! So, trying out different brands, designers or stores to sample their plus-size collections and being flexible when buying clothes will give you access to a wider range of selections and prices.
Trying to buy clothes you spot in fashion magazines is also not a great idea, because they are typically biased on the "skinny" types and may look ridiculous on you, even if they were made in your size! Two C's which are critical when shopping for plus-sized clothes: comfort and camouflage! You can never go wrong in your fashion choices if you keep these two concepts in mind!
