Tattoos are a common sight these days. In the past, you would see tattoos only on biker gangs and outlaws. Nowadays almost everyone sports a tattoo. In the old days, tattoo artists would make tattoos manually. His one hand would hold a needle and puncture the skin while his other hand would inject the ink into the puncture. Although there are some parts in the world where manual tattooing is still practiced, nowadays tattoo artists use a tattoo machine.

A tattoo machine is commonly used now because it is more convenient and safe. Aside from this, the time it takes to make a tattoo is shorter. The machine can move the needle in and out while driving the ink into your skin. Most tattoo artists are aware of just how deep they should drive the needle so that your tattoo will look perfect.

Here are some tips on how to get a tattoo.

  1. Prepare a list of tattoo shops in the area. There are likely to be several tattoo shops within the area. Look in the phone book or browse the Internet for tattoo shops and compile them in a list. You could either call each one or go and visit the workplace where they do their tattooing so you can get a feel of the place.
  2. Ask around. You may have friends who have already have tattoos. Ask them where they had their tattoos made. Whip out your list and check if the place they mentioned is on the list. If it isn't, write it down too. Include that tattoo shop on the list of the shops you are going to visit and check out.
  3. Be picky about hygiene. Just because your friend recommended the shop doesn't mean that it will work fine for you. Check it out yourself and find out if the place looks hygienic. Of course a tattoo shop would have dark ink and darker posters, but as long as the place smells and looks clean, it should be okay. However, if you still feel uncomfortable about the artist or the place, just go elsewhere for your tattoo.
  4. Watch closely. If you have already chosen the tattoo shop and you are now waiting for the tattoo artist to start on your tattoo, look around carefully first. Be sure that the tools to be used on you have been sterilized or are disposable (which means they really dispose of it after each patient). No communal inkwells for you, please. Keep your tattooing session safe. Oh, and if the tattoo artist isn't wearing latex gloves, maybe you should make a beeline for the exit.
  5. Rest and keep your tattoo clean. One of the things people with tattoos don't realize is that tattoos are wounds. This means that when your tattoo is still new, you should make sure it is clean and you don't apply any pressure on it. Apply Vitamin A on your new tattoo so that the healing process is faster.

There are a lot of tattoo artists who keep clean and hygienic studios so you needn't really worry too much. Hope you get the tattoo you want!
