Light up makeup mirrors are useful especially when one will face an audience during a presentation or a performance, where one needs to apply make up in detail. In the earlier days, lighted make up mirrors were limited to dressing rooms where large, yellow light bulbs line the edge of the mirror. This still exists, but there are more compact and energy efficient light up make up mirrors, some designs are sleek enough to fit in a handbag. Here are some varieties of light up make up mirrors:

Wall mounted lighted make up mirror. For use in the powder room or the bedroom, wall mounted lighted make up mirrors are the best choice. Yellow bulbs are no longer used, while fluorescent light bulbs are more commonly used, as they are brighter, energy efficient and do not emit too much heat. Most wall mounted mirror designs are round, with a round fluorescent bulb on the edge of the mirror. Some manufacturers use light emitting diodes (LED), which are even brighter and use less energy.

Natural light mirror. This design uses light that simulates natural light, as if you are putting on make up during the daytime. The technology used for this is the daylight spectrum fluorescent bulb. It is also dimmable, making it possible to adjust the intensity of the light, so it is not too glaring.

Compact lighted mirror. There are several kinds of compact lighted mirrors. The bigger ones are rectangular and look like small cabinets--inside both doors and the middle portion are mirrors. Usually, the light is situated at both sides of the middle mirror, adjacent to the side mirrors. This compact design can be brought when traveling, inside a suitcase.

There are sleek designs for compact lighted mirrors that can fit in a handbag, and look more like a compact makeup kit. There are also hand-held lighted mirrors. LED technology makes it possible to manufacture smaller lighted mirrors, since these can be battery operated and produce light as intense as a large fluorescent bulb.

Investing in a lighted mirror is a good move, especially for women who find it necessary to put on makeup. These kinds of mirrors are also useful for plucking eyebrows and putting on facial remedies. Most of these mirrors have a 1x magnification and at least 3x optical grade magnification on the other side, and both lighted. Magnification helps especially in the application of eye make up. Fluorescent bulbs do not produce much heat, so you do not sweat while applying make up.

These are available for sale in online stores such as Amazon.com, and other websites. Prices for these mirrors can range from less than $25 to more than a hundred dollars, depending on the size and light technology used. Most of these are plugged into an electrical outlet. The smaller ones are battery operated. Lights can be replaced with new ones, which are also available on the market.
