Adding natural lift and volume to your hair doesn't need to involve an expensive trip to the salon. You can achieve the same results from home with a little bit of product and know how. In fact, you can even use ingredients right out of your own refrigerator.
The fastest and easiest method for adding natural volume to your hair is to use a good conditioner in the shower, and then blow dry upside down. Continually run a large, round brush through your hair from roots to ends, twisting at the tips for a little added lift. For even more volume, add a thickening or volumizing mousse to wet hair and brush in the opposite direction to which it normally falls. Tilt your head to the right and brush the hair on that side of your head over to the left while using the blow dryer. Repeat on the opposite side and finish at the back, tilting your head forward. Top with some finishing spray.
Roll With It
If you have a little bit of time to play with, invest in some inexpensive large velcro rollers which are typically self gripping, though you may need to use some hair pins to hold them in place. Wrap large sections of dry hair around the rollers beginning at the crown, working your way down. Make sure that the rollers are set firmly against your scalp. Spritz a thin mist of volumizing spray to the rollers and apply some gentle heat using the medium setting on your blow dryer for at least 5 minutes. Allow the hair to cool. Gently remove the rollers being careful not to create any tangles. Brush out with a round brush or wide tooth comb, or simply run your fingers through your hair for a tousled look and add some spray for gentle hold.
Add Volume With Food
You can't have great, natural volume with dry, brittle hair. Luckily, your refrigerator is like a one-stop-shop when it comes to hair care. Apply mayonnaise liberally to hair until completely coated. Cover with plastic wrap and a warm towel and let set for at least 20 minutes, then rinse and shampoo as usual. The longer you leave it on, the more conditioned your hair will be. The oils in the mayonnaise will leave hair silky and shiny, setting the stage for natural volume. An avocado will work the same magic!
Often, using the same shampoo and conditioner repeatedly can leave a residue on your hair and scalp that will affect its texture and volume. A mixture of 1 part apple cider vinegar to 4 parts water applied to clean hair, allowing to sit for a few minutes before rinsing will help strip heavy residue from your hair, leaving it clean and smooth. Removing this extra residue will create natural volume and lift, bringing life back to dull hair.
Spending a little time conditioning your hair on the weekends will result in spending less time with your blow dryer. Some inexpensive ingredients can be your best investment when it comes to adding natural volume to your hair.
