How To Apply Anti-Shine for Film & Television

The lights used in making movies and television shows are punishingly hot.  Makeup artists are always on the lookout for cosmetics than can lessen the shine and keep the makeup flawless for a longer period of time.  It’s a good thing that a number of makeup manufacturers have created anti-shine products.

Smashbox’s Anti-Shine for example is a great product to wear for individuals who wear lots of makeup but have an oily skin type.   It keeps the skin matte even under the klieg lights.  Anti-Shine from Smashbox is oil-absorbing yet light to use.  It can be used under or over your makeup.  The beauty of this product aside from allowing your face to move from shiny to matte is that it has tea tree oil which helps combat breakouts.  Vitamin E is also present to address skin damage.

Here’s how to apply anti-shine makeup for film, television or other uses.

  • Clean the face well.  Start with a good facial wash that can remove the oils and dirt that are present on the face.  Wash the face with warm water.  Get a clean towel or a washcloth (make sure it is soft) and pat the face dry.
  • Apply moisturizer.  Get your favorite moisturizer (make sure it is not greasy).  Put a small amount on your finger tips and gently apply this on the face.  Allow the moisturizer to get absorbed by the skin before moving on.
  • Apply the anti-shine.  Dab the anti-shine product on oily areas of the face like the forehead, under the eyes, on the nose (including the sides) and the chin.  Your fingers should move in a circular motion when applying the product.  Mix it well and make sure you are spreading it properly.  You want a thin layer of anti-shine only.  Let it dry for 30 seconds.
  • Apply foundation and makeup.  Once you have applied your foundation and makeup, watch out for oily or shiny spots on your face.  Touch-up with anti-shine as needed.  You can use a sponge to press the product unto the oily areas and at the same time absorb the oils that have formed.

Reminder:  Make sure to apply only a small amount of anti-shine on the face.  Too much can cause a white residue to appear especially if the person sweats a lot.

Anti-shine products are used as primers.  They prepare the skin for the actual makeup.  People have different skin types and if you have oily skin, you need a sort of barrier between the oils and your makeup.  But even if you don’t have oily skin, the lights used for films and television shows are so bright that you can expect your makeup to degenerate fast.  Anti-shine helps keep makeup looking as it should for longer than normal.

Not all makeup artists use anti-shine.  Some swear by it while others think this product is unnecessary.  Make the judgment for yourself and see which side you belong to.  You may have to test several anti-shine products before you find the right one. Anti-shine products are a bit pricey but they work!
