Using curlers on your hair will add body and volume. This is especially useful if you have limp, straight hair. Using a curling iron can be tough on your hair, and will result in damage in the long run. Using brush rollers is safer, but these can still be tough on hair. Foam curlers, on the other hand, are gentle on hair. If you sleep with curlers on, foam curlers are also softer. These can be ideal for use with children, as they don’t sting the scalp while in bed.
There are different ways to curl your hair using foam rollers. You can go the direct route, just letting your hair curl while you sleep. Or, you can use hair products to help maintain body, if you intend to blow-dry for a quicker setting.
What you need:
- Foam curlers
- Hair spray (extra strength)
- Blow dryer (optional)
- Wide-toothed comb
Wash your hair. Shampoo and condition your hair as you normally would. Dab your hair dry with a clean towel. At this point, you would want your hair to be just a little damp. If it’s dry, it won’t curl. If hair is too wet, then it might not properly dry and curl while you sleep. Comb away tangles with a wide-toothed comb.
Curl your hair. You will have to decide on the size curls you want. Smaller sections result in tighter curls, and the less drying time required. Take one small section at a time, and start rolling from the tip. Roll your hair at the middle of the curler. Roll the curler under your hair, as this will give it more body (than rolling toward the top). Start at the center of your head, moving your way down the sides and back.
Use mousse and hair spray. If you’d rather not sleep with your rollers on, you will need to add a few steps before actually curling your hair. Prior to rolling your hair, apply just enough mousse. Be sure to apply just the exact amount. Too much mousse will be difficult to dry. Too little mousse won’t hold your hair properly.
After applying mousse, apply hair spray. Then, you can roll each section using the foam rollers.
Sleep. If you prefer to curl your hair overnight, you can now sleep with your curlers on.
Blow dry. If you prefer to blow dry your hair instead of sleeping it off to dry, then you can do so once you’ve completed rolling each section onto the foam rollers. Blow dry your hair just enough to allow the mousse and hair spray to dry.
Remove the rollers. Don’t pull the curlers away. Instead, slowly roll them out, making sure that the roller doesn’t pull on hair. If some hair gets tangled on the roller, carefully take these out. As a last resort, you can cut off strands that get stuck in the rollers.
Remember to tightly roll your hair in the foam rollers. The center of the rollers should look squished. If the foam of the curlers become too compacted, this is a sign that they have lost their resiliency, and that you will have to replace these soon.
