Getting the best clothes for your kids doesn’t always mean that you have to buy the most expensive clothes you can find.  Quality clothes may be bought at a friendly price at thrift stores, garage sales and even online auctions.   Here are some tips on how to save money on dressing up your young ones:

  • Bring your children.  You can save by bringing your children with you when you shop for clothes, because this way, you can be sure whether the clothes fit them right and not waste money on buying another size.  Make them try on the clothing and see if it suits them well.  Match clothes according to a child’s age, height, body type, activities, personality and preference.  Consider also the weather and the occasion the clothes would be worn in.
  • Buy quality items.  Check for quality by looking at how the fabric is made. Is it tattered?  Does it have lumps in places?  Is the cut just right?  Making sure that your clothes last a long time will save you money that you would spend in replacing these when they get destroyed and unwearable.
  • Buy in bulk.  Buying in bulk makes individual clothing items cheaper, thus saving you money in the long run.  Just make sure that the items will actually be used.  If possible, buy a size larger so that children who grow fast may still be able to wear them.
  • Shop for sales.  There are a variety of stores where you can shop for clothes at a discounted price.  In off-season clearance sales, you can buy clothes that are not in season.  Buy these in a size larger so that when the season arrives, your children who have grown a bit can wear them.  Consignment stores offer a place where you could buy items people have sold because they no longer like them.  These may still be in good condition, so look for something your children can wear.  The same goes for yard sales, online auctions and thrift stores.
  • Buy classic items.  Trendy clothing is more expensive, and it is easily replaced with newer trends.  By focusing on classics, your children will be able to wear the same clothes again and again without being labeled unstylish.  You could just add a few trends or accessories to the ensemble to freshen up their looks.
  • Learn how to sew.  Making your children's clothes has many pros. First, you would be sure that their clothes would fit them nicely.  Second, you can copy designer trends using cheaper materials.  Third, you can sew the clothes that they themselves design. Lastly, it can be a whole lot cheaper than buying clothes in stores.  The only con is that it takes time, effort and skill.  Also, you could teach your children how to sew their own outfits. It would enhance their skills, creativity and patience.  They would also enjoy being trendy and practical at the same time.

Dressing your children on a budget is a practical decision to make.  Knowing how to shop smart and save up means you have money to spend on other matters like a trip to the beach or a wished-for toy.  Have fun budgeting!
