Have you recently discovered you are pregnant, yet you would still like to color your hair? You need not sacrifice changing your hair color. There are vegetable dyes on the market, but please be advised that many of these do have hidden ingredients that can be very harsh and should not be used while pregnant. Anything labeled as a permanent dye should be avoided, and even some semi-permanent dyes, as some of these may contain ammonia. Your best bet is to try coloring your hair the old fashioned way, with henna or indigo. You may also highlight your hair with chamomile or lemon juice by making a pot of chamomile tea and rinsing your hair with it.

To color your hair red, auburn, or to add reddish tones to your hair, mix 16 oz. of henna powder to 3 tablespoons of lemon juice, lime juice, vinegar or any other acidic liquid. You may add coffee grounds to darken the final color, raspberry tea or red wine to bring out darker burgundy tones to black hair, or chamomile tea to create a rich auburn with goldish highlights. The mix will look green at first but then turn a muddy brown. Cover the mixture with plastic wrap and leave it undisturbed overnight at room temperature. The next day, you may add essential oils of lavender, rosemary or peppermint to the mixture, as it will have a strong smell, much like wet hay. Wash your hair and then wearing plastic gloves, separate your hair into sections and apply the mixture from the roots to the tips. Be generous and coat the henna mix onto your hair as thickly as possible. Cover your hair with saran wrap or a plastic shower cap, making sure to keep any henna off your hands or skin, as it will stain them a reddish brown color. Wait about 3-6 hours, and then rinse the henna out. Add some conditioner to detangle your hair, but do not shampoo your hair. Once the henna is rinsed you may style your hair as usual. You should see an immediate change, and depending on your natural color, your hair should be anywhere from strawberry blonde to deep mahogany.

You may also dye your hair black by following the same steps, but adding a mixture of indigo to the henna, equal parts for brown hair, and one part henna to three parts indigo for a rich black. Good luck and happy coloring!
