Exfoliation is a great way to remove dead skin cells and soften and brighten the skin on the face.
First, you'll need to choose your products and tools. I recommend using exfoliating gloves or one of the new mechanical exfoliating scrubbers. You can use a loofah or synthetic exfoliating sponge too. Stay away from exfoliating cleansers that are too harsh, with over 25% pumice, because they can irritate the skin. Lastly, find a moisturizer to apply after. You can use one with alpha/beta hydroxy or glycolic acid if you want to continue to remove dead skin. Otherwise pick a moisturizer that is made for your skin type.
Now that you have chosen your tools to exfoliate your face you can begin. Start by getting your face wet with water. This will help lubricate the cleanser you have chosen. Apply the cleanser to your skin and being to rub it around. Use a circle pattern and avoid the eye area. Your eye area is very sensitive and exfoliation can damage it. I would do this for a few minutes. Do not spend more time on one section of your face than another. This will give you an uneven appearance.
You should use tepid or cool water to rinse the cleanser off your face. Hot water and irritate the new, freshly expose skin and make it red. You should never use hot water to even wash your face. The facial skin is delicate and it strips the oils. This will cause your face to produce extra oil to compensate creating even oilier skin.
Pat your skin dry. Never rub at your face with a towel. You have to be kind to the skin on your face so it will be kind to you.
Apply the moisturizer. If you are using a moisturizer with an acid in it to continue the exfoliating process, your skin might feel tingly or get red for a little while after. This is normal. If it hurts, gently wash it off and use a different moisturizer.
There is another option for exfoliating your face. You can choose to use an exfoliating mask. These usually have a fruit base that will exfoliate the dead skin of nicely without all the scrubbing. You apply the mask, wait 15 minutes and then rinse off completely.
Never over exfoliate and be sure to use a good moisturizer regularly to keep the face looking beautiful.
