Beating the Crowds and Stress of Holiday Shopping
Difficulty:

Although the holidays are supposed to be about peace, friendship, giving, and family, they can quickly turn into stress about parking places and last-minute gift buying. It doesn't have to be this way! If done the right way, Christmas shopping can be a stress-free, and even enjoyable experience.
- Plan ahead. If you have your heart set on specific gifts for specific people, plan and shop early. Stores are often out of whatever the hottest toy on the market is, and items may be backordered until after the New Year. Planning ahead for each person will enable you to be calm and not rushing around at the last minute.
- Watch the ads. If you are planning ahead, you can watch the circulars and the TV ads to find out when the items you are looking for will go on sale. It's pretty frustrating to buy something and see it for 50% off the next week!
- Check wish lists. Amazon.com has wish lists, as do many other websites - this way you can be sure that you're really getting your loved one what he or she wants!
- Organize a gift exchange. If you have a large family or a group of co-workers that usually exchanges gifts, cut down on the spending and the stress by implementing an organized gift exchange. Draw names so that you are each only buying for one person. You can still make a festive occasion out of it by exchanging gifts together or incorporating food (always a great idea)!
- Buy gift cards and gift certificates. Gift cards are the perfect compromise - you are giving a gift but the recipient gets to pick exactly what he or she wants! This is great for the people who are hard to shop for.
- Donate to charity. Many people in the First World have too much stuff as it is. For a meaningful holiday gift, think about donating to someone's favorite charity or to a cause that is close to their heart. Many people feel very honored by this.
- Opt for quality time. If you just don't know what to get someone who is close to you, give them time with you! Make a cute certificate or card entitling them to one lunch out with you or something along those lines. In our busy world, this is often very appreciated!
- Shop online. The only problem with shopping online is that you can't wait until the last minute. Start your Christmas shopping early and you won't even have to pay extra for postage. In addition, you can skip the crowded malls and shop on your lunch break or in your pajamas!
- Remember why you're doing this. The holidays can be busy and stressful, but they are fundamentally about special time spent with loved ones. Don't let the shopping take over - people would much rather be with you than get more gifts.
If you start early and stay on top of your holiday shopping, you'll be able to find the perfect gifts and spend quality time with your family and friends!
