You have waited for years to have long, luxurious hair that cascades down your back and gains oohs and aahs from everyone who sees it. There is only problem; you cannot seem to keep your beautiful long hair tangle free. There are a few tricks for how to untangle your long locks.
A good shampoo and conditioner are the first steps to maintaining healthy long hair tangle free. Almost every brand carries a formula specifically for long hair, many advertising smoothing properties. Choosing the best shampoo will be trial and error for the most part, since different shampoos work differently with everyone's body chemistry. However, when looking for a conditioner, choose one that is light and does not leave sticky residue that will encourage tangling. By putting a small dab of the conditioner between your fingers and rubbing, you will be able to determine its weight and stickiness.
Another product you will want to consider is shine serum. Again, almost every brand carries some version of this now. Some of the cheapest serums work as well as the most expensive. Again, put a little between your fingers and rub together. The serum should be very light and silky, never leaving a sticky residue.
In the shower, shampoo mainly the roots of your hair and work your fingers in small circles to build lather. Not clumping long hair on top of the head while shampooing prevents tangling and drying out the ends. Rinse and then condition being sure to saturate the ends of long hair and keeping conditioner on the scalp to a minimum. Your ends, the farthest from the scalp, do not benefit from the natural scalp oils, so they need the most moisture. The more moist and healthy long hair is, the fewer microscopic barbs there are along the shaft to hook onto one another and tangle.
A large toothed comb can be used to gently comb long hair in the shower and distribute conditioner. Leave conditioner on for a couple of minutes to saturate the hair.
When drying, separate hair into sections with clips and blow dry bottom sections first. As each layer dries, let another one down and repeat. A roller or paddle brush can be used to achieve even smoother, straighter styles. Once hair is dry, apply a drop or two of serum in the palm of your hands and rub hands together. Then run hands over hair as if gathering it up to put into a pony tail and again, focusing on the ends. If need be, apply a little extra to the very ends.
Finally, keep a small paddle brush with you if your hair is especially prone to tangling. Giving your hair a quick brush throughout the day will prevent tangles from building into mats.
