The hair, a person's "crowning glory", needs proper care like any other part of the body. While some content themselves with regular shampooing, putting in more effort can give you healthier, shinier and stronger hair. These tips apply to both men and women who want to keep their hair healthy:
Keep the scalp and hair clean. Regular shampooing removes excess oil and dirt from the hair and scalp. If you shampoo every day, use mild shampoo to avoid drying of the scalp. Natural oils keep the scalp healthy and free of dandruff. You can also use aloe vera gel as a shampoo, as this is safer because it is natural and free from chemicals. Others add oil to their scalp to replace lost oils. When rinsing the hair, make sure you massage the scalp to totally remove the shampoo; otherwise, your scalp will start itching from the dried shampoo residue.
Avoid excessive chemical hair products. Styling hair is made easier with hair spray, gels and mousse. It can hold a hairstyle for hours, and you need not worry about "retouching" it. Other hair products used for perms and hair relaxing have strong chemical contents that can harm the eyes and the skin. They can also make the strands brittle. That is why you should wait for a few months before doing another hair straightening or perming.
Keep blow-drying to a minimum. Blow-drying and hair ironing will make the strands brittle and dry. This is the reason why most people with dark hair observe that their hair changes into a lighter color when they blow dry regularly. It is best to air dry your hair, or use an electric fan or a blower whose heating can be turned off.
The scalp needs massaging too. Massage the scalp while shampooing. You can also do head massages even when you are not in the shower. You can apply oil or lotion for the scalp. Massaging helps in blood circulation, and it also loosens dry skin to avoid dandruff.
Avoid excessive sun exposure. When going out, it is not enough to apply sun protection on your skin, but also protect your hair from direct sun exposure. Use an umbrella, or a hat, especially during noontime. When going for a swim, whether in a swimming pool or the beach, use a swimming cap to protect your hair from too much chlorine or salt, and the sunlight.
Change your hairstyle. It is advisable to have a haircut at least once a year to remove the dry ends that result to split ends. Having a new hairstyle also boosts your confidence. Short hair generally makes one look younger.
Maintain a healthy diet. Apart from the tips given above, do not forget to take care of your general health. Maintain a healthy diet and take lots of fluids. A healthy body and a healthy scalp mean you have no dandruff, less hair falling out, and lesser possibility of balding.
