To look fresh in the heat, you need two things: light, bright, and sheer makeup, and products to absorb excess oil. Let your skin breathe and experiment with bold color when it's hot out. Here's how to keep your make-up looking fresh during a hot day.

  1. Start with the lightest coverage you are comfortable with to even out your skin tone. Avoid using heavy pancake foundation, cream foundation, or products for dry skin (unless you truly need them). A tinted moisturizer is great in hot weather and will provide a lighter base for the rest of your warm weather make-up.
  2. In general, avoid eye, lip, and cheek makeup that is likely to "melt" in the heat. For your cheeks, try a stain or liquid blush. These are a light alternative to cream blushes, which slide on your skin in the heat, and powder blushes, which cake. A cheek stain looks fresh and healthy and is indistinguishable from a natural flush.
  3. Experiment with eye make-up that is lighter and brighter. Stay away from eye shadows with a brown tone; dark shadow is too dramatic for the heat. Avoid heavy cream eye shadows and heavy powders. You can find sheer liquid eye shadows that work nicely when it's hot. Hot weather is also a great time to experiment with vibrant color. Try a swipe of brilliantly colored eyeliner, leaving the rest of your eyelid bare. Choose an eyeliner that's on the drier side, like an eye pencil, instead of a creamy stick eyeliner. Use waterproof mascara. No matter how hot and humid it gets, it won't smudge.
  4. On your lips, avoid brown hues and stick with pure pops of color. A lip stain, like the cheek stains mentioned above, gives you a very natural look. You can also try brightly colored glosses - think popsicle colors! If you do choose a fun, bright lip, avoid vivid eye make-up, and vice versa. You want to look fresh, so focus on the one feature you want to play up, and keep rest of your look bare and sheer.
  5. Lastly, there are plenty of products to use to blot out excess shine and keep your skin looking cool in the heat. Dust on sheer loose powder before you leave the house and carry light pressed powder with you to touch up. Blotting papers will take away excess shine and oil without layering anything on your skin. This is a great way to keep your skin naturally glowy, but not sweaty and shiny, when it's hot out. Also, try misting your face with water if you're overheated; this is a great way to refresh yourself, and since your make-up is light, it won't smudge. And if you've used only tinted moisturizer and sheer liquid makeup... there's always the pool!
