Self-esteem is the value we place upon ourselves. A notion of high self-esteem is important for our individual psychological selves. When we think highly of ourselves, we are more confident and live a happier life overall. Our self-esteem is a measure of our personal worth and high self-esteem is the road to happiness.
In order to keep your self-esteem, it is important to know how to build up your self-esteem. Listed below are just a few ways that you can keep your self-esteem:
- Exercise. If you take care of your body, you will not only look good and be healthier, but you will have more confidence and self-esteem.
- Don't be too critical of yourself. If you've made an error at work, fix it and go on with your life. Everyone makes mistakes.
- Act as though you are confident of yourself and you will be.
- Prepare in advance any projects you have to get done. You will keep your self-esteem if you are always ready.
- Try not to compete with everyone else. Be non-judgmental of yourself and do the best you can. There may always be someone who can do something better than you; do not focus on your competition. Focus on what you can do and how you can do it to your utmost abilities.
- Write positive affirmations in a journal every night before going to sleep. List everything good you did that day. Do not focus on anything negative. Remind yourself how good you are and then put it in writing to make it even more real for yourself.
- Use positive language with yourself. Instead of telling yourself you missed a ball at tennis today, remind yourself of the good serves you had or the great rallies you kept going.
- Talk to yourself out loud. You might want to do this when you are alone, at home. Tell yourself you are good, you are special and you are a unique and valuable person.
- Spend your free time with people who help your self-esteem and make you feel good about yourself. Try to keep to a minimum the amount of time you must spend with people who put you down or are depressing you.
- Treat yourself well. Award yourself for a job well done every now and then.
- Be nice to other people. Smiling at a person will not only lift that person's spirits, but it will help your own self-esteem because you did something nice for someone else.
- And last, make a list of all the things you do well or have accomplished in life. Chances are, this will be a long list. Keep it somewhere handy where you can look at it and smile.
