How To Make a Cowboy Costume

Your friends would like to have a get together. They would like to plan for a reunion but it's going to be a costume party with a cowboy theme. That would be nice for a change, wouldn't it? It's going to be at your friend's house in Dallas, Texas. He'll dress up his place with pictures of horses and cowboy bebop. He'll also have some country music playing. It's really going to be fun.

Now wait a minute, what will you wear? Why not wear a cowboy suit. You can make one yourself with a few things you have around the house. All you need to do is gather a few things from your cabinet and your craft box. A few stitches and some creativity will do the trick.

What you will need:

  • An old pair of jeans which you have in one of your boxes
  • Checkered shirt which you have in your closet
  • A big handkerchief from your drawer
  • A leather belt, which you are still using
  • Suede material, which you have used for one of your kid's projects
  • Needle
  • Thread
  • A pair of scissors
  • Ten gallon hat or a cowboy hat which your kid used for a play
  • A pair of boots

Now that you have everything you need ready, let's start moving. Let's try to see how you look with the few things you have already. Put on your old pair of jeans, your checkered shirt and tie the big handkerchief around your neck. Wear your boots and cowboy hat as well. Now take a look at yourself in the mirror. How do you look? You are almost done, but your get up still needs a few finishing touches.

Oh yes, you lack chaps to give your get up the real cowboy look. Chaps are heavy leather pants without a seat and worn over ordinary jeans to protect the legs of cowboys when riding horses. You can make your own chaps or improvise and make them out of an old pair of suede pants. Use either an old loose pair of suede pants or someone else's that is bigger than your regular size. Try to get a picture of a pair of chaps and use it to customize your old suede pants. If you are making chaps from your left over suede material, measure from your waist to the top of your foot to determine the length. The chaps should be wrapped around your legs, so measure accordingly. Cut the fabric according to the design you have and sew the hems. Once your chaps are done attach them to your leather belt.

Now you are all set. Put on your old jeans, your checkered shirt, your chaps, tie your handkerchief around your neck, and wear your boots and cowboy hat. Howdy partner, you look great. Don't forget to bring some straws to chew and walk with your feet a little apart for some added cowboy look. You are all set to ride your horse and gallop away to the party.
