How To Make a Redness Reducing Oatmeal Mask

The face is one of the most vulnerable parts of the body. It is constantly exposed to the harsh and drying winds as well as the sun that can cause skin burns.  For people living in the city, the skin is also one of the parts of the body that is most exposed to pollution. Because of this, redness can develop in the face. An easy solution to relieve and lessen redness is through an oatmeal mask that you can make at home.

  1. Prepare the oatmeal. Generally, you can use whatever brand of oatmeal is available. Make sure, however, that you do not use flavored or sweetened oatmeal, since some of the ingredients can cause the irritations on the skin. Some chemical sweeteners can also make the face sticky and will be difficult to remove once it has clogged the pores. Place the oatmeal in a food processor and blend it until the individual grains are shredded into smaller pieces that are gentler on the skin.
  2. Cook and add eggs. Next, cook the oatmeal following the cooking instructions in the box. Let the oatmeal cool down slight before creating the mask. You will, however, want some of the heat to be retained in the oatmeal, for a more therapeutic effect. Crack an egg and take the egg whites. Beat this in a small bowl before adding it to the oatmeal mixture. Make sure that the egg whites are completely spread into the oatmeal. The egg whites will help remove white heads and black heads.
  3. Lemon juice and water. Next, add several drops of fresh lemon juice into the mixture. If there are no lemons available, try other tangy citrus fruits that are in season. The slightly acidic nature of citrus fruit juice will help to remove the excess oil that builds up in the face. It will also help to reduce the redness in the face. You can add more lemon juice if there is discoloration on your face from scars, apart from the redness. Add just enough water to the mixture so that it will be easy to apply on your face. Make sure, however, that the mixture is not overly saturated with water, since this will make the fluids run down your face.
  4. Other ingredients. Apart from lemons and eggs, you can also add baking soda and olive oil on the skin. Baking soda will relieve itchy skin, while olive oil will help nourish dry skin and will remove the wrinkles in the face.

Once the ingredients have been mixed thoroughly, apply the mask on your face using your hands. Create a layer of oatmeal on the face and let this sit on your face for fifteen to twenty minutes or until the mask has dried out.  Once dry, rinse the oatmeal mask off your face and wash using your regular facial cleanser. Use lukewarm water for rinsing, since the skin will be sensitive for a few minutes after using the oatmeal mask.  Tap dry with a soft towel.
