Are you looking for simple and inexpensive ways to add to your little girl’s dress up wardrobe? Keep her out of your closet and into her own by making a set of fairy wings. Follow these instructions to create simple fairy wings at home.
Materials:
Sturdy craft wire 6’-7’ long
Pair of ivory pantyhose
Duct tape
Scissors
Needle & thread
Wire cutters
Sheer fabric
Ribbons
Sequins
Glitter
- Make the wing frame. Shape the craft wire into a large circle. Tape the ends together using the duct tape. Then twist the circle into the shape of an 8 sideways. Use duct tape to secure the center of the eight so that the wings don’t shift. Now shape each side into a wing shape. Have fun with this step. It’s up to you which shape you choose. Make soft looping wings or add points to the ends for a more puckish fairy.
- Cut the legs off a pair of pantyhose. Use one leg for each side of the wings. Stretch the hose over the wing frame to form the soft netting of the wing. Maneuver so that the open part of the hose comes together at the center of the original 8 shape. You can secure the ends with ribbon and hide them here.
- Add fabric and ribbon to the wings. Sew the sheer fabric to the wing frame in a patchwork style or shaped like hankies draping from the wings. Secure ribbons to trail from the center of the wings or from the tips of the wing points. Have fun with this and decorate until the wings flutter and sail around the wearer.
- Decorate with glitter and sequins. Let your little girl have some say in the decoration. She can attach the sequins or sprinkle glitter over the wings.
- Sew the elastic to create armholes. Get the best fit by having the fairy stand with her arms outstretched. Fit the elastic in small bands around the upper arms.
Your new little fairy will enjoy her wings whenever she gets the chance to play dress up. If you can, make your own adult size wings and you can enjoy the time together playing dress up and being girls.
