How To Properly Apply Hair Products

You've purchased the hair products, but do you know what to do with them? Before you jump at the chance to slather on your newest hair product, read this guide to make sure you know how to properly apply hair products.

Step 1

Styling spray should be combed in. If you are using styling sprays or creams on your hair, you should first apply the product to your hair and then work it into your hair. Use a comb or your fingers to spread the hair product over the area evenly. Each strand should have a bit of the styling product on it.

Step 2

Gel needs to be used sparingly. When you're applying hair products like gel, use only a small amount to achieve your desired look. Disperse a small amount of gel onto your fingertips, and rub your hands together to disperse the gel over your fingers. Gel can very quickly make your hair look greasy and heavy. So don't apply it to every strand. Rather, just run your gel-covered fingers through your hair quickly and without a method. Aim for a light covering on small sections of your hair. It should be a random application, leaving some hair covered and some not. Gel applied at the roots of your hair will provide volume (when sculpted upright), while gel applied at the ends of your hair will provide definition. Decide which look you want, and then focus on applying the gel to those areas.

Step 3

Hairspray should be used as a finisher. When you have achieved the look and style you want for your hair style, hairspray should be used to hold that look in place. It's probably the most popular hair product, but it's often used incorrectly. To properly apply this hair product, you should hold the hairspray at least a foot away from your head. Don't spray directly at the roots of your hair, or you'll flatten it. From a distance, gently mist the hairspray onto your head, ensuring you don't direct the spray at any specific area for very long. With hairspray, use a little as you can so avoid a hardened, crusty look. If you have properly applied hairspray, your hair should still be able to move naturally, but your style should stay throughout the day.

Step 4

Shine serum is meant to be used on sections. If you want to add shine to your hair, the hair product you need to use is a shine serum. This product is meant to be applied to small chunks of your hair to highlight or separate sections of your hair. Apply a small amount of your fingers tips and work it through small sections of your hair. If you do this properly, your hair will show off your natural shine without looking greasy from too much hair product use.
