Research show that cellulite is actually more common than we think – some studies say that around 80 to 90% of people all around the world suffer from cellulite. So if you’re particularly embarrassed that you have it, don’t worry: chances are, that girl sitting next to you has it too!
What is cellulite, anyway? Cellulite is the appearance of unsightly bumps, waves and lines generally found in the buttocks and thigh area. Simply put, it is caused by toxins that get trapped inside the fat cells in those areas, because of poor blood circulation and increase in fluid retention. The common triggers of this are not well-known, although factors such as genetics, heredity, poor nutrition and a sedentary lifestyle are all considered the likely culprits.
There are many prescribed methods for removing or at least reducing cellulite, and most are easy enough to do. Some of these methods include drinking lots of water everyday to help rinse out toxins from your body; having a more healthful diet of fruits and vegetables, and reducing the intake of foods with too many preservatives and fats. Getting more exercise, particularly those which target the butt and thigh areas, and doing some body brushing is also said to help.
What is body brushing? Body brushing is using a dry brush to massage your body in order to improve your blood circulation. This practice should be done daily after your shower. To do this, here are some of the steps you should follow:
- Purchase a special body brush. Body brushes, or dry brushes, may be purchased from health and body shops, as well as pharmacies. They are usually made of natural fiber, and have a long handle for easy use. As an alternative to the body brush, you can also use a loofah or even a washcloth, or if your skin is highly sensitive you could use a facial brush instead.
- Massage. Starting at your feet, massage your body, making long strokes towards the heart. Specially focus on the areas with cellulite. This massage action would help improve your blood circulation. Complete this process by brushing your buttocks in a circular motion.
- Do this consistently. Remember, you’d have to do this massage therapy daily for about 5 months before you can see significant effects. As has been mentioned, it is best to do this ritual right after your shower.
Remember, to effectively reduce the appearance of cellulite, this massage regimen should be done in conjunction with the adoption of a healthier lifestyle. You could also try out other remedies such as massaging coffee grains in a circular motion on the affected areas; and consulting dermatologists about the best cellulite reducing creams available (most of them contain ingredients such as horse chestnut, rosemary and gotu kola).
If you just simply need to get rid of your cellulite pronto (say, you have an unexpected trip to the beach this weekend), you might be wishing right now for a miracle cure or a skin pencil with a cellulite (or skin lip) eraser handy. Don’t fret! You could always cover up with fashionable sarongs and cute shorts. And don’t focus too much on your flaws. While you’re in the middle of curing your cellulite, remember you have other fabulous assets that you could be proud of. Good luck, and stay beautiful!
