How To Replace a Tag Heuer Crystal

The TAG Heuer watches are luxury watches created by the Swiss. They are very well known for their chronographs as well as their sports watches. The companies motto is "Swiss Avant-Garde Since 1860".

TAG Heuer has two basic types of crystals in it's watches. They have acrylic and sapphire crystals. Both of these crystals have drawbacks but also have benefits in regards to their usage. Knowing the different characteristics and functions of both crystals is imperative in determining what type of repair is needed and what crystal to replace.

Step 1

After learning and getting familiar with the different types of crystals TAG Heuer uses, determine the crystal type you TAG uses. The sapphire crystals are more expensive but also the most scratch resistant. They virtually cannot be scratched unless a diamond scratches them or another substance of equal hardness. Some TAG's use acrylic or plastic crystals.

Step 2

Find out the damage type the TAG has encountered. If the TAG uses a sapphire crystal it might have shattered on impact. A acrylic crystal might have scratched somehow in the watch. If the crystal happens to be a sapphire and has shattered or is scratched then the only way to repair it would be to bring it to a jeweler.

Step 3

If possible, repair the crystal yourself. If the TAG has a acrylic or plastic crystal there is a possibility of simply buffing out the scratches. Take a small amount of toothpaste and apply to the scratched area. Then you can buff slightly to see if the scratch can be removed. There is a product on the market called a Crystal-Kleer scratch remover made specifically just for this type of repair. The acrylic or plastic crystals are resistant to shattering but scratches are likely. Try the toothpaste method or the scratch removal tool. If you do happen to shatter the crystal while attempting the repair you will have to bring the watch to a jeweler for the repair.

Sandpaper or any other harsh abrasive is not recommended as this will create more small scratches then solve the issue; do not try something you are not one-hundred sure of doing for the repair.

Step 4

If you have tried the repairs yourself or feel that you cannot do the repairs then take it to a certified TAG reapir facility or a jeweler that is familiar with this type of watch. Shop around for the best prices as this repair is not inexpensive. It will cost about one-hundred dollars to replace a sapphire crystal and a tad less so replace a acrylic crystal.

In regards to the water-resistance of the TAG watch; to ensure that it stays water resistant and within warranty bring it to a jeweler certified for TAG watches.
