Ever since the world of hairdressing introduced methods of straightening one’s hair, men and women alike have gotten a little obsessed over putting an end to their wavy, curly, and kinky locks. I, myself, have been a pro-hair straightener since college days. My once wavy hair became sleek and straight in just an hour at the salon. The rest, as they say, is history.

I experimented with different hair straightening methods. The first time I gave my long hair a straightening procedure, I used a flat iron. The effect is instantaneous. It is fabulous, to say the least. My curls were gone in minutes! The flat iron works best if you know how to use it. Much like a blow dryer, the flat iron straightens your hair because of the heat coming from the equipment. However, it is not advisable to use every day, because it will damage your hair and make it dry. Yes, your hair is sleek in minutes, but be ready for the frizz once the climate gets humid. Funny as it seemed, I avoided rain at all costs, lest my newly-straightened mane went back to its original wave. If you prefer quick but wonderful results, ask a friend to do the dirty job for you.

If you do not have a straightening iron, then you may want to consider using a blow dryer. Just grab a comb and set the blower on high. The heat tames your frizz and makes your hair soft, and therefore easier to comb and manage. After combing, you can just run your fingers through your hair to style. It is effective, though it won’t give you the same sleek result the flat iron can. You also face the similar problem of not exposing your hair to humid weather, as it will give you frizz.

Meanwhile, people with enough money head to the salon and avail themselves of their hair straightening services, such as relaxing and rebonding. Relaxing uses harsh chemicals but will definitely do away with those stubborn waves and curls. However, while your hair is being treated, your scalp will feel hot, as if the stylist is putting something molten on your hair. If you are not used to this procedure, you might experience redness and itchiness on your scalp or the skin near your hair. You do get uber-straight hair in an hour, but the result is not as sleek and natural-looking as it is if you have it rebonded.

The procedure used in rebonding is not at all different from that of relaxing, but you will feel more comfortable with this one. The whole straightening procedure may take up to two hours, depending on the inclusive hair treatments.  As a finishing touch, the stylist will make your hair sleeker with a flat iron. The result is gorgeous, straight hair.

Now if you are on a tight budget, scout the supermarkets and grocery stores for do-it-yourself straightening products. There are lots of straightening creams and conditioners that suit all hair types. You do not really need to spend too much on having your hair straightened. A word of advice, though. Consult friends and your personal hairstylist before you try anything drastic. You cannot just experiment with hair straightening products containing strong chemicals.
