Many people look at unwanted hair in a variety of ways. In many societies, excessive hair growth is considered both undesirable and unhygienic, especially when it comes to the aesthetic of women. While there are some women who generally let their body hair grow out, the majority of women would rather have smooth, hair-free skin. In men, there are also certain areas wherein hair growth is not welcome. In response to this, there are a number of hair removal methods that are easily done so that the unwanted hair will no longer be a problem or a source of shame.

There are temporary methods of hair removal, most of which involve depilation. Depilation is removing the top area of the hair, the hair that sticks out right above the surface of the skin. Depilation does not remove the entire hair, as it leaves the hair roots intact, ready to grow out again in the next cycle. Epilation, on the other hand, is the removal of the entire hair as is, tip to roots.  As a temporary solution to the unwanted hair problem, depilation involves anything from shaving, to waxing, or even buffing. Shaving or trimming the hair is the most common form of depilation, while creams, which dissolve the hair at a chemical level, can also be found in the market. Add to that the fact that the hair can also be removed through buffing, with the use of friction. Depilation can last anywhere from a few hours to a few days, depending on your rate of hair growth.

Epilation lasts longer, from a few days to a few weeks on end. Epilation can be done via waxing the affected area, tweezing the individual hairs out, or using rotary epilators, which take the hairs out, roots and all. Other types of epilation include threading, wherein a thin string is wrapped around the individual hairs and is yanked out forcefully, or sugaring, which is similar to using a depilatory cream except the substance is more paste-like in consistency.

There are also a number of more permanent methods employed in removing unwanted hair. Electrolysis is one of the more common hair removal methods, and possibly the most effective among most people. Somewhat less effective are laser treatments in flash lamps. The main problem with these is that you will want to remove the hair from the affected area without damaging the nearby skin. This is difficult balance to maintain, so if you are considering permanent hair removal, you might want to go to a trained professional and spare your skin the trouble.

Hair growth can also be inhibited through the use of prescription drugs and prescription creams, but this will require a continuous dosage of the medicine. You can ask your doctor about the types of oral and cream-based preparations that can be prescribed in order to inhibit the growth of unwanted hair.

It would be in your best interest to consult with a professional first before trying out or deciding on any of the hair removal methods mentioned above. Your skin is the largest organ of your body, and you don’t want to go ruining it by being ill-informed about the effects any kind of hair removal method may have.
