Hair loss is a problem, whether for older people or adolescents. Due to stress, genetics, and other factors, the causes of hair loss now are not limited to older age. However, medicine has never stopped looking for ways to cure hair loss and to promote hair growth. Over the years, we have found more and more options (depending on preference and budget perhaps) on which solution to take to deal with hair loss. Remember that curing hair loss requires maintenance and is not just a one-take deal. Here are some of your options.

1. Hair transplantation or hair restoration. This is a medical procedure where surgeons place skin containing hair follicles onto the bald or balding areas of the head. It is primarily used for male patients. Initially limited to a select few due to price, hair transplant is becoming less expensive nowadays, but may be still too expensive for some at $6,000-$15,000 for the whole operation. The surgery is done on an outpatient basis where only mild sedation and injected topical anesthesia are used.

2. Hair vitamins. Certain vitamins promote the growth of healthy hair and these are:

  • Flaxseed oil - one tablespoon or one tablet per day
  • Beta-Carotene - 10,000 to 15,000 IU daily
  • Vitamin E - 400 to 800 IU daily
  • Vitamin B-complex - 50 mg of the major B-vitamins
  • Vitamin C with bioflavonoids - 1 to 2 grams daily

3. Check forums. There are health sites dedicated to hair loss, and you can read over the forums for suggestions and recommendations about hair loss. You can also learn more about laser combing, a new product also promoting healthy growth of hair.

4. Check hair care product websites. There are some companies that develop products and other solutions that can remedy or prevent hair loss. They have scientific laboratories to discover new medicines and products that they can add to their product line to help you keep or renew healthy hair.

5. Self-care is always best

  • When washing your hair, gently massage your scalp using your fingertips. Be careful not to ‘scratch' your scalp with your fingers as that can cause further damage or even result in a nasty scratch on your head.
  • Wash your hair with lukewarm water but use cold water to rinse. This allows the cuticles to close and seal in the moisture and nutrients your hair needs.
  • Allow hair to dry naturally, and without scrubbing vigorously against a towel to minimize breakage.
  • Try not to wear caps that block the natural air flow around your hair. Let your hair ‘breathe'.
  • Be careful when wearing hair clips and pins. Be gentle when placing or removing them as strangling your hair could result in further hair loss due to breakage.

It is always recommended to seek professional medical advise before undergoing any kind of treatment for your body - whether its your heart or your hair.

If a person's hair is his crowning glory - with these solutions at hand, more and more people can now regain the hair they used to love, and keep it that way.
