Congratulations on your upcoming Graduation! Graduation is an important time in not only your life but the lives of those that supported you through your schooling. Graduations usually require you to wear the standard cap and gown. The gown you receive will mostly likely be made of polyester and due to this, it will be hot during the long ceremony. The gown is also tailored to stop about mid-calf, exposing the lower half of your leg.
For females, it is appropriate to wear a nice dress/skirt and heels, or a pant suit underneath the gown. If you choose to wear a suit, it is acceptable to not wear your jacket due to the length of the ceremony and the temperature where the ceremony will be held. Panty hose should be worn if you are in closed toed heels, as it will make your skin tone even for pictures and during your walk across the stage to receive your diploma. Be sure to practice walking in your shoes prior to graduation and ensure that they do not cause any blisters or tripping.
Wearing your hair down can be most flattering on graduation day and also allows you secure the mortar board to your hair with bobby pins, preventing it from falling off. Keep makeup natural, as there are hot lights on the stage and in the arena that can cause you to sweat and your makeup to run.
For males, slacks and dress shoes look the best. Combine those with a collared shirt and you will be looking sharp following the ceremony and for the various pictures you will take. Collared shirts can be either long sleeved or short sleeved depending on the time of year of your graduation. Suit jackets are optional under the gown because of the length and how hot the ceremony can become.
Be sure to shave the morning of graduation and go through any other skin care routines that you may have. Practice wearing your shoes to prevent any tripping and blisters as well.
For both, if there is something from a family member, religious or cultural belief, find out if it is cleared to wear outside of your gown. For instance, many wear leis or turquoise jewelry in times of celebration.
Now that you have graduated, looking your best will be important, as you are your own billboard for future employers. Dress like success and you will soon fulfill those dreams no matter the economy!
