YahooOne of the most important decisions you will make for yourself and your family is selecting your financial advisor. Much like choosing a doctor to look out for your health, or a lawyer to protect you in the courts, a financial advisor is there to help protect your assets. Many people think they know what is best for their money and how to invest it wisely. But, to be honest, many people make the wrong financial decisions for themselves and it can prove costly. It is important that everyone have a financial advisor that they can count on and trust with how best to protect their assets.
Understand your assets. Before you begin to trust someone else with your money and investments you need to understand what you have. Go through all of your bank statements and any other financial statements you have. Make sure you understand where everything is and what it is in. This will at least give you a place to start once you pick a financial advisor.
Ask for referrals. Once you begin to search it is best to ask friends and family for whom they can refer you to. This is great because you will have some experience with who you are about to talk to and you can get some information on them. Hopefully your friends and family would not suggest someone who they do not or would not use themselves.
Interview the candidates. Once you have a decent list together of prospective financial advisors you can go ahead and start interviewing some of them. Make sure you take your time with these interviews and do not be afraid to ask very important questions. Get their background information: where they graduated from school, where they have worked before and anything else you can think of. Remember this is your money that we are talking about.
Consult your family. Once you have narrowed your list down to maybe one or two people who you are interested in go ahead and run your thoughts past some family members. Your family is going to have a vested interest in your financial wellbeing and will want what is best for you. They can also give you some other tips and information that you may have overlooked.
Choosing a financial advisor is no easy decision. This is someone who will be responsible for your money and your family's money. Take your time and do all the necessary research you need to make sure you are making the right decision.
