Moving day can go much smoother just having an extra set of hands to help with the heavy items. Read options for finding labor to assist with your move.

Moving can be a pain, literally.  You can always ask friends or family to help with a move, but they usually conveniently have something to do or cancel at the last minute.  While you may hate the idea of spending money to hire someone to help with your move, it can be well worth the expense.  Moving day can go much smoother just having an extra set of hands to help with the heavy items and speed up the entire process.

So, if you aren’t relying on friends, where do you look for help?  There are several options, but first you need to decide how much help you would like.  Do you just need a hand loading a truck or do you want to find someone to do all the work on their own?    Some people really aren’t comfortable driving big moving trucks, would you like your hired help to provide a moving truck?

Step 1:

General help. For a very affordable option, you can put an ad on a classified site, such as Craigslist.  College kids are often eager to many some extra money.  This is a great option if you just need another set of hands.  But, keep in mind with this kind of help you never really know what you are getting.  You may very well have a great individual that shows up, but you also run the risk of hiring someone who doesn’t have respect for your stuff.  They may be careless and cause unnecessary damage to your belongings.  With this alternative, you really just take your chances.

Step 2:

Labor only. Some professional movers offer labor only options.  This lets you have control of your things from origin to destination because you remain responsible for renting and driving the truck.  The only service they provide is assistance in loading and unloading the vehicle or storage pod you provide.  With this option, the service provided should be more professional.  When working with a company, the employees that show up should have received some sort of training in proper techniques used in the industry.

With a quick web search of moving labor, you should be able to find several competing companies.  More and more people are looking to alternatives to full service moving companies.   With the growing popularity of review sites, you should be able to find and compare several moving companies.  When you find the top rated companies, it’s a great idea to get a quote from each service.  Is it a set fee or are they paid by the hour?  Do they carry any sort of insurance?  What happens if any of your belongings are damaged?

Step 3:

Full service. Of course, the most expensive option, but some may say the only way to go, is to find a moving company that handles every aspect of the move.  Some people don’t even want to pack the boxes.  You can hire help to do every single part of your move – for a price.  You should get several quotes before selecting a moving company because prices can differ dramatically.

In summary, there are several options to explore before your next move.  Decide what level of service you’d like and determine your budget, and you’re sure to find help to make moving day less of hassle.  If you are lucky enough to have your employer assist in your move, you may be able to save money and pocket some of your moving allowance by hiring moving labor instead of a full service mover.
