Every single year the government gives out millions of dollars in government grant money to individuals and businesses for specific goal and tasks to be accomplished. The wonderful feature with a government grant is that the money that is given out does not have to be paid back. So where do you begin to look for this free money that Uncle Sam is dishing out and how can you get a government grant?
First of all it is important to note that Uncle Sam is not just going to give you a government grant for the heck of it. All government grant money is earmarked to accomplish a certain task or goal. For example, the government may be granting $50,000 to an individual or business that can use the money to fund research on a plant fertilizer. If your company sells dog biscuits, then you are obviously barking up the wrong tree. However, the government offers thousands of different grants ever single year and you never know for what you may be eligible.
To find out if you are eligible for any government grant money and to see if you can get some of Uncle Sam’s free bucks, follow these steps:
Go to Grants.gov: There are many different websites online that will give you information on government grants, but one of the most popular and well informed sites is grants.gov. Once you are on the home page click the link for registration and fill out everything that is asked of you.
Look for grants that you qualify for: As soon as you are registered you will be able to use grants.gov to search for any grants that you or your business may be eligible to receive.
Find a grant and apply: Once you have found a grant that you feel you are qualified to receive then go ahead and apply for it. Fill out all the necessary paperwork and then follow the instructions on how and where to turn it in. Be sure you are 100 percent honest in the application as the government will check it out thoroughly.
Wait and wait some more: The wait time will of course depend on the grant that you have applied for and there really is no rule of thumb here. This is the time you simply have to exercise patience. There is a nice feature on grants.gov that you can utilize here. On the home page you will see a link that says ‘track my application’ which can be used to see how far along you are in the process.
