As a tourist or local citizen, when you happen to pay for an incorrect sales tax, you tend to ask for a tax refund. Since VAT is quite heavy, you can't just let the VAT refund slip away. Every country and state has different sales tax percentages, so you can't just calculate your refund by using your home country's. Whether you are an individual or a corporation, whether you have a sales tax permit or not, you are still entitled to get your refund for something paid in error. Getting a refund, though, is not as easy as paying for it.
- Don't hesitate to move forward and ask for it. It's not a case whether the cashier typed the incorrect amounts purposely or not. It may also be their faulty program. What's important is you only pay for the exact amount. All you have to do is show your receipt and complain to the cashier or the store manager. Once proven, the management will not think twice about giving a refund.
- In a bigger store or mall, if you can't talk to the cashier, proceed to the customer service and show your receipt.
- If you bought something online, a tax return is not easy. Contact the company's headquarters as soon as possible. If the business is from a different country, there should not be any tax. But if there is, then there is a possibility to get a tax rebate.
- Owning a business has its advantage when dealing with tax refund. Bring appropriate paperwork like exemption certificates when you complain. Since you are exempted from paying taxes of items for resale, then you are entitled to a VAT refund. Your exemption status is declared in exemption certificates.
- Tax refund is not applicable only to retail items. Incorrect taxes paid on utilities can be refunded if you ask for it. This requires a form, which you can get from the local tax office. However, thanks to the Internet, tax forms are now downloadable. All you need to do is go to the tax commissioner's website. The website not only supplies forms, but also displays a monthly tax calendar, submission schedules, due dates and federal refund status. Click on the appropriate forms and have them printed. Once done, then it's time to visit the state's Tax Commissioner to file your claim.
You can still file for tax refund for purchases outside the state. Small purchases may not be worth the time and hassle, but big purchases are.
To compute sales tax, you need a calculator. Since sales tax differs in every state and country, check on the percentage by visiting the Federal Tax Administration website. If the sales percentage is 5.75%, divide it by 100, and then it becomes 0.0575. Add 1 to it so the sum becomes 1.0575. Check on the retail price of the item you are about to buy. The price, for example, is 24. Multiply the 24 by 1.0575. The product, which is 25.38, becomes the net price. If you paid for an exceeding amount, then you can ask for a refund.
