General Liability Insurance is insurance coverage to protect the general public and lessors of property. General Liability policies contain 4 main types of coverage: Personal Injury, Bodily Injury, Advertising Injury and Property Damage. If you are hosting an event on someone else's property, it is very likely that the property owner will request proof of your general liability insurance in the form of a certificate of insurance. Business owners carry general liability insurance year round, individuals can purchase short term/special event policies for the specific time period that the insurance is needed. Please bear in mind that not all insurance agents have access to this type of coverage; you may have to make a few phone calls to find an agency that can help you. Typically a short term policy can be issued and paid for over the phone; it is not necessary to visit an agent's office.
Start by knowing what you need. Typically the property owner/event venue will draw up a contract permitting use of the property. The contract will outline the insurance requirements to satisfy the contract. Have the contract handy along with the dates that you will need the coverage along with detailed information about the event. Detailed information will include: description of the event, number or guests or participants, budget for the event, details about entertainment, etc.
With your information gathered, contact your current insurance agent for a quote. If your insurance agent is unable to assist you with obtaining a short term policy, they may be able to refer you to an agency that can.
Once you have been provided with a quote it is crucial that you review the quoted coverage to be sure it meets the requirements set forth in the lease/rental contract. Because the policy is for a specific time period, this is the last opportunity to make changes to the coverage dates.
Once you are ready to purchase the coverage, contact the agent and ask that the policy be bound. Ask your agent to provide the property owner/venue with a Certificate of Insurance.
