Bills. Everybody has them. The first and most important thing on the minds of bill payers is managing to pay on time. Bills arrive in the mail or email. The knee-jerk reaction is to ignore them until later. The reason for this procrastination lurks deep at the back of the mind where "have to" and "want to" engage in a daily personal battle for supremacy. If you truly want to pay bills on time, the first thing is to remind yourself why you have bills. People with bills take advantage of numerous creature comforts like heat, hot water, electricity, owning a home and a car, a closet full of clothes and dinner at fine restaurants. How do some people manage to keep their bills paid on time? It's as simple as having keen awareness of financial limitations. Everything purchased is not a "must have." These are items that increase bills and make life a struggle. Here are some tips about how to pay your bills on time.

The Bill Payer's Challenge
Most people know what their financial limitations are and ignore them. Going blithely amid the crowds at the malls may be fine. But, at the end of the month, bills pile up. The challenge becomes an onerous task to pay them. There are several ways to manage money better and pay bills on time:

  1. Begin by owning up to what's owed.
  2. Make a list of all bills owed and categorize them by significance, i.e., utilities, rent or mortgage, food, gasoline and medical generally are regular monthly bills.
  3. Review all of the remaining bills that are not regular monthly bills: charge cards, one-time purchases, etc.
  4. Total the first group. Do the same with the second group.
  5. Figure what regular monthly income is before bills are paid.
  6. Plan to pay one-time purchases off first, but after all regular monthly bills are paid. Do this by paying those with the smallest balances first. Make partial payments on the larger balances so that you do not incur credit problems.

It takes a willingness to organize your bills. Create a place that's fairly quiet in your home where you can regularly tend to duties of paying bills. Be reasonable about the length of time it will take to pay off the bulk of one-time purchases, so that your regular bills are more manageable and can be paid on time. Once bills are manageable, the secret to paying your bills on time is to take note of the pay dates on each bill. If necessary, call billing departments to arrange pay dates so that they coincide with the dates your receive your paycheck. Center all of the pay dates of bills around two payout dates every month. Most companies are quite flexible about rearranging their invoicing dates.
