How To Use Quinoa in Your Meals

Quinoa punches way, way, way above its weight in the battle of the grains. Never heard of it? You and your family are missing out big time in both nutrition and flavour! Keen-wa or Keh-no-ah was a staple in the diet of the Incas in Peru a millennium ago and it's resurfacing today in the Life Style glossies.

Quinoa is an ancient seed originating from the Andes mountains of South America and used like a grain. But it contains more protein by weight than any other grain. Beyond that, it has a near perfect amino acid balance. It is the 800 pound gorilla in lysine, an amino acid needed for tissue growth and repair. Quinoa is also a good source of fibre, phosphorous, iron, manganese, magnesium, copper and Vitamins B and E. It is the Swiss Army Knife of nutrition.

How To Send Out Graduation Announcements

Graduation announcements are used both to invite people to graduation ceremonies, and to let people know that an acquaintance has graduated. Sending out graduation announcements is easy, and such announcements will be especially appreciated by family friends and more distant relations who might not have been aware of the graduation without announcements.

Decide whether you want invitations or announcements. Graduation invitations are sent out to people whom you would like to invite to attend the graduation. While you can send invitations to people who are unlikely to attend, you may prefer to send announcements in those circumstances so that people do not feel obligated to attend. Announcements can also reduce the stress on people who might feel like you are angling for graduation presents.

How To Choose Dinner Party Music

In planning a successful dinner party, there are so many things to consider. Choosing your guests is the first thing. The next thing is what you will feed them, and after that, what drinks you will serve. One of the most important parts in planning a party – and a part that is often overlooked – is what music to play in the background during dinner. Your choice of music can make or break a dinner party.

How To Clean Tarnish from Sterling Silver

Having a dinner party and your sterling silver looks not so sterling? Or that favorite ring or vase is looking a bit dull? Don't worry, you can restore sterling silver to its previous glory with a few simple ingredients and a little elbow grease. Of course one option to clean that dull off your sterling silver is to buy a silver cleaning lotion, which is available at most grocery or general stores. But what if you don't have the time to run to the store or would like to use a non-toxic alternative? Well, you have a couple of options. One is to use white toothpaste, (only white toothpaste -- gels don't work), or to use our best friend baking soda! Toothpaste is better if you do not have a lot to clean. Otherwise use the baking soda method.

You will need the following items:

How To Cut Onions With No Tears

You've been asked to be the sous chef while your spouse plays the chef. One of your jobs is to slice, chop, and mince some onions. Just thinking about it, the tears start to gather at the corners of your eyes. Well, that might be a slight exaggeration, but we all know how bad it can be working with onions. The sulfur compounds found in onions are noxious and highly volatile, entering the air with that very first slice into the onion.

Following are four easy, tried-and-true suggestions for minimizing the flow of tears:

How To Throw a Wig Party

Determine how you will include the wigs. You must begin thinking about how you are going to incorporate the wigs into your party or activity early in the event planning stage. Ask yourself the following questions:

Will I provide the wigs or will I ask guests to bring their own?

Will I offer any prizes or awards for the best wig worn at the wig party?

How To Get Good Customer Service

Everyone likes to receive good customer service. And we can all probably recall times that we received customer service that was extraordinary. Here are a few tips to increase your odds of getting customer service that surpasses ordinary:

You set the tone. Your attitude sets the tone for the quality of the customer service you will receive. When you are greeted with a grunt (or worse) from a surly teenager manning the counter, how do you respond? Yes, the kid needs to learn some respect but the odds that you may be able to impart that lesson by lecturing him? Nil. As any parent knows, the best teaching occurs by example. Always treat others as you would like to be treated, especially when you are not being treated well.

It was a bittersweet moment for fans of the Sopranos when HBO announced the final 9 episodes of the 6th season. Over the last 9 years (Madonn, has it been that long?!), we've come to know Tony like our own boss, Paulie like our own Captain, and we laugh every time we hear Silvio go: "JUST WHEN I THOUGHT I WAS OUT ..." You know how it goes.

Now that the critically acclaimed series is coming to an end, we have all the more reason to savor every minute of the final 9 episodes!
How To Discuss Politics

The 2008 presidential election is still many months away, and yet the campaign seems to be in full swing already. Clearly, the next couple years promise to be a true political circus in America. Candidates left and right are touting their originality, leadership credentials and the vision of their respective parties.

The next two years should also be a time for all us lowly plebeians to flex our political muscle and make our voices heard. Political dialogue is crucial to the health of our democracy, so we should embrace, rather than shun, the conversations and debates we share with friends and loved ones. In this day and age, though political differences seem to be at a high water mark, our courage to engage in political dialogue seems to have dwindled to a level of meekness that does us all a disservice. There are ways to discuss politics without the conversation dissolving into petty, mean-spirited bickering.

How To Plan an Oscar Party

Planning that 'Oscar party to end all Oscar parties'?

The arrival. Doesn't the Red Carpet segment of Oscar night entertain us just as much as the awards ceremony itself? Why not have some fun with the tradition by creating your own "Red Carpet" for your arriving guests? All it takes is a strip of red construction paper, which can also keep your entryway carpet from getting dirty. People will have a hoot making an entrance on the Red Carpet, with other guests greeting them and perhaps a photographer snapping a picture or two for posterity.

Food. The Oscars are like some sporting events; there are a few exciting, unpredictable moments (big awards) peppered over a long period of mostly dead time (commercials, awards no one cares about). Don't make your guests resort to mere conversation during those lulls. Feed them like you care!
How To Create a Place Setting

You've made all the necessary preparations for a soiree to remember - Cornish game hens, a peat fire burning unobtrusively in the fireplace, and the finest Washington State wines money can buy. The evening proceeds without a hitch, until Martha Stewart reaches for her soup spoon... but where is it? Nobody knows! It's not where it should be - it's not even on the left side of the knife. Was it delivered with the soup? No. How uncouth - are we to use the dessert spoon, or just scoop handfuls of broth into our mouths? Oh good heavens, there it is - on the left side of the plate....

Do you hear the frustrated whispers and smell the mortification mingling with your butternut squash? You've just committed a major place setting faux pas. Now you must get on your knees and beg for Martha's forgiveness (good luck)!

How To Host a Chocolate Tasting

A chocolate tasting is much like a wine tasting minus the hangover. Well, that's not completely true. You get the kind of hangover whose symptoms include lying awake in bed from 2 a.m. to 3 a.m. to 4 a.m. to 4:35 a.m. until you finally give up and get up. This is not the worst kind of hangover to have, though; it's a great time to do your taxes. Besides, hosting a chocolate tasting is enough fun that it is worth the occasional sleepless night. So here are a few tips to help you host a chocolate tasting extraordinaire:

How To Throw a Super Bowl Party

The Super Bowl is one of the most-watched events every year. Football fans spend all season cheering their teams on in the hopes that their team will play in (and win) this single game. But even if your favorite team doesn't make it to the Super Bowl, it's still such an exciting event that you're likely to watch it anyway. In fact, you're likely to watch it with one or two, or twenty-four, of your closest friends.

How To Host a Person with a Food Allergy

For a person with allergies, the hardest place to eat is other people's homes. As a host you can make it a little easier by following these simple steps.

Do a little research. Search the Internet and get yourself familiar with their allergy. Don't just assume that you know, because many foods have hidden ingredients.

Review the menu with your guest. If you let them know ahead of time what you are serving, then they can help you provide foods they can eat. You can also ask them to drop by ahead of time and bring some foods for you to try and incorporate in the menu.

How To Make a Disco Ball

Have you ever been to a party and seen a disco ball hanging from the ceiling? You might have thought to yourself, "I can't believe there's a disco ball here! It must have taken ages to make." Though you ought to know what to expect from it, you're still surprised as the ball showers a majestic aura over the entire reckless scene. A mirror ball is the most poetic accessory to a party; it's tarnished romance, beautifully fractured, but unabashedly romantic nonetheless. Who doesn't enjoy being dappled by the disco ball's light?

If you found yourself thinking you could never devote the time to making a disco ball, think again! By following these simple steps, you too can make a disco ball and let its presence elevate your festivities.

How To Use Wedding Reception Etiquette

The wedding reception of a friend or relative is a very special day. Because it is easy to get caught up in the moment at a social function such as this, it helps to know some basic etiquette. Here are some tips on how to use wedding reception etiquette:

Respond so very promptly. Make sure to RSVP when you get the wedding invitation. Don't leave your friend hanging until the last hour. If the invitation is addressed to only you and does not say "and guest," take that as an indication that you are to come solo. Weddings are expensive and, if you're not in a serious relationship, the bride and groom may not want to invite any extra guests. If the invitation instructs you to select a dinner entrée choice, by all means do so -- if you haven't picked an entrée, the bride will most likely have to call you or make the selection for you (and she really doesn't have time for that).

How To Use Tipping Etiquette

Tipping is a normal -- and often expected -- part of today's service industries, but as a consumer you may not always be sure who to tip and how much. Here are some basic guidelines on tipping etiquette:

Tip for a job -- any job -- well done. There are no rules that are set in stone when it comes to tipping. If you're unsure if tipping is appropriate for the service performed, go with your gut instinct. Even if your neighbor doesn't tip the newspaper delivery person, if you think he does a great job, then go ahead and include a tip with your payment.

How To Use Proper Etiquette

Volumes of books have been written on the subject of etiquette. There are proper ways to conduct oneself when attending a social function, religious ceremony, social event or meal. One does not have to refer to oneself as "one" in order to observe proper etiquette, and, in fact, it's quite possible to display very improper behavior even when speaking eloquently; proper etiquette is more than saying the proper, flowery things at the proper times.

Nevertheless, it's not difficult to use proper etiquette. Generally you must treat others in the same manner that you would like to be treated, or sometimes even more politely than you feel you need to be treated.
How To Use Table Manners

Using good table manners shows a respect for your fellow diners. Even in today's typically casual dining atmosphere, displaying good basic manners is necessary. Most of us have shared a meal with someone who made the experience unpleasant by exhibiting a lack of manners--you don't want to be that person! Here are few tips on using good table manners:

As soon as you are seated, place your dinner napkin on your lap. As you use it during your meal, return it to its place on your lap. At the end of the meal, place your soiled napkin next to your plate, but do not refold it.

How To Use Office Etiquette

Etiquette refers to the conventional requirements of social behavior. Or in more simple terms, it means knowing how to act. Different situations require different types of etiquette. Knowing how to behave in an office is important if you want to set a good example. Those who follow good office etiquette are promoted and given choice assignments. Those who are seen as crass or unkempt are passed over or have their employment terminated. What follows are some office etiquette tips:

Though casual dress is more acceptable nowadays, an employee still must look neat. In addition to wearing clean, pressed, "business casual" clothes, one should also be well-groomed. If you're meeting with a client, dress appropriately. In most cases, this means a suit.

How To Use Telephone Etiquette

Manners aren't outdated or old-fashioned. Having good manners allows people to see you in a positive light, which is desirable for all of us. Whether at work or in our personal lives, understanding a few social rules will help us to get ahead. We've all been in situations where someone's behavior is rude or inconsiderate, and telephone use seems to be an area where many people forget their otherwise good manners. Here are a few guidelines regarding telephone etiquette:

How To Play Kids' Party Games

Everybody loves a party, and kids are no exception. Festive decorations, yummy food, tons of balloons and of course, fun party games, help to make the day memorable. If it's been a while since you played children's party games, here is a quick refresher:

Bozo Buckets: Line up 6 buckets and stand a child at one end. Instruct the player to toss a ball into the closest bucket. If the child is successful, she gets to try the next bucket. The child gets to continue tossing the ball into each progressively further bucket until she misses. Award a prize for each successful toss, with the prizes getting a little larger for each toss.

Planning a party for children? You'll need kid-friendly food, a few games to play and festive decorations. Are you also hosting the party? In that case, you'll need a good sense of humor and a lot of patience, too!
Getting your house or yard ready for a children's party requires a little bit of planning. Once you've mailed the invitations and decided on the menu, you'll need to shop for party supplies and decorations. Here are a few tips:

Consult the guest of honor. Your child will be your best guide in deciding on a theme for the party. You might choose a popular cartoon or television character, sports, nature, music, fishing, ballet or music. Once you have settled on a theme, you can begin to choose coordinating party supplies and decorations.

How To Throw a Great Hawaiian Luau Party

In Hawaii, the word "luau" means "feast". Luaus are typically large parties where groups of family and friends gather to share good food and good fun. Hawaiian luau themes are popping up everywhere, from birthday parties to weddings. Here are some tips to add some style to your own Hawaiian luau party.

Location and Theme

Your luau party should be held outdoors if possible. If you must move indoors because of the weather or space restrictions, make sure your decorations and food can easily be moved inside.

Advise your guests ahead of time that the theme of the party is Hawaiian. Ask them to dress in Hawaiian shirts or dresses, shorts, sandals, and anything else they think would add to the theme.

Decor
How To Observe Email Etiquette

Email has rapidly become one of the most popular ways for people to communicate. Because some people are still learning the ropes when it comes to email, proper email etiquette is not always followed. Here are some tips on how to observe proper email etiquette:

Don't type in all-capital letters. Typing in all caps is a major email faux pas. Besides being distracting and difficult to read, it appears as though you are screaming at the recipient.

Don't use funky, distracting fonts and colors. An email that comes through written in small, pale pink text will be hard for the recipient to read. You're safer sticking to the standard black, 12 point text in classic fonts like Times New Roman or Arial.

How To Throw a Great First Birthday

A baby's first birthday is a momentous occasion. They've gone from not being able to hold up their own heads to a curious, smiling, chattering, crawling ball of energy in only one short year! Celebrate this wonderful day in style with these handy tips.

Keep in mind that this party is really for the grownups. Your baby will certainly have fun and enjoy the attention, but they really have no idea what's going on. Invite family and close friends, because an intimate party with those who love your child will be more meaningful to you as parents.

One thing you need to have plenty of is film for your camera! Make sure your camera, video camera, and/or digital camera are all in good working order, and recharged or equipped with fresh batteries. Everyone will want to have their picture taken with baby.
How To Set Up Outdoor Halloween Decorations

Halloween is a great opportunity to go all out and set up outdoor decorations in front of your home. From glowing ghosts to scary ghouls, this is the perfect time to use your imagination and create a dazzling display.

Here are some tips and suggestions to get you thinking outside the pumpkin!

Keep it safe. Remember that on Halloween night, small kids will be making their way through the neighborhood in search of treats, and they don't always take the time to stay on the sidewalk or watch where they're going. Keep lawn decorations easily visible, and store any cords or wires well away from places that little feet can find them.

If you're throwing a party, it just takes one trip to the party supply store, or one visit to an online merchant to quickly figure out that there is an astounding array of products available to choose from.
